First American edition of English translation, done from the Italian of Silone's first version of this anti-fascist novel. Written while Silone was in exile in Switzerland, it was first published in German 1936. 8vo, light green cloth with gilt lettering readable on front board but more faded on sunned spine, wraps soiled, fore-edge rough-cut, wear with fraying to corners/crown/heel, book slightly cocked, hinges cracked, text block a bit loose from binding though still attached - block slides to flush with bottom edge of the boards while unusually far down (3/8") from the top. Small newspaper clipping mentioning Silone taped to ffep, where there is also an old price in pencil. No markings observed on text pages.

The Communicants - certainty unmasked. The Silence - God's silence - the negative impression."
