Description:
[San Antonio, TX, 1890. Three original black and white watercolor wash images of Missions in the city of San Antonio, Texas. Each painting on a sheet of watercolor paper, 6 x 9 in., laid into a handmade folder. Painted image of a small group of pansies, in purple, yellow, and green, edged in gold, on front cover. Gold ribbon threaded through the upper and lower margin of both front and rear cover. The folder is separated along the spine edge, with some soiling and edgewear. The three watercolor paintings of the Alamo, San Jose Mission, and Concepcion are all very good, and labeled in manuscript. A pencil note on the verso of the front cover states that these paintings were done by "Dr. Ingelhart's wife, Austin, Tex." Likely these images are from the 1890s, as the artist is styled "wife" not "widow." Fannie Chambers Gooch (1849-1931) was a well-known author at the time of her marriage to Dr. David Thomas Iglehart. She had published "Face to Face with the Mexicans" in 1887, describing the six years she… Read More

Description:
NP ["Richmond?" suggested on OCLC]: np, 1863. Printed broadside, 15 1/2 x 12 inches, the headline printed in bold capital letters. An anonymous essay on the text "What are direct taxes, within the meaning of the Constitution?" The author comes down decidedly on their being unconstitutional, citing Adam Smith, arguments from the Federalist Papers, 1790s congressional debates, early Supreme Court decisions, and Elliott's Debates, finally applying them to the present situation "Direct taxes must be apportioned according to the census. Whether the census of 1860 taken under authority of what was then the agent of the sovereign states, now forming this Confederacy, is a census within the meaning of the present Constitution, is a question we will not now discuss. But in any and every view, if direct taxes can be laid, they must be apportioned" and, since a census had yet to be taken in the Confederacy, direct taxes would be illegal. Description:
[Bourbon & Leesburg, Indiana, 1942. Seven manuscript journals kept in small top bound notebooks, each about 6 1/2 x 4 in., a total of approx. 1000 pages and 65,000 words. Bixler writes near daily entries between March 29, 1937 and April 15, 1942, a few paragraphs for each day describing his attempts at raising chickens and hogs, plowing, harvesting, cultivating a truck farm, etc., and faithfully recording the weather. He keeps an accurate record of his work life, but also notes local events, theorizes about where his life is headed, and how the impending war is affecting him. He writes in both pencil and ink, and all entries are legible and well written. Accompanying the notebooks are three of Bixler's drivers licenses, issued for 1937, 1938, and 1939. The first has a small photo of him, smiling and wearing a jaunty hat, attached to it. Also laid in is a business card from his later career as a Vice-President of H.D. Tousley Co., Inc. General Contractors, of Indianapolis, Indiana. Bixler is 19 years… Read More

[Lenox?, Mass, 1815. Single sheet, 24.5 x 20 cm., partly printed, completed in manuscript. Old folds, heavily foxed. For $60.00 Gale sells one bark mill and grants to Elias Gould, of Henniker, County of Hillsborough, [NH], "the full and exclusive right and liberty of using the said Bark-Mill in the town and county aforesaid." Signed by Gale and witnessed (probably by his wife), dated in ink, September 11, 1815. See RINK 1394, for one copy of an 1818 broadside printed in Lenox, which takes note of a patent infringement for this patent; and for the grant of patent right, see RINK 1392, which is an 1813 notification that Gale has purchased exclusive right to C.
