It is superbly bound in red straight-grained morocco and printed on paper superior to other sets. Three vols. 8vo, orig. patterned semi-stiff wrappers, orig. block-printed title labels on upper covers (all three a little defective), new stitching. The Tanabata Festival traces its origins to the Chinese Qixi Festival and marks the meeting of the deities Orihime and Hikoboshi, represented by the stars Vega and Altair, respectively. According to the legend, the Milky Way separates these lovers, and they are allowed to meet only once a year on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month of the lunisolar calendar. Description:
400-500 leaves. Two sheets & eleven notebooks in various formats from small 8vo to large 8vo, orig. wrappers, orig. stitching. [Nagano Prefecture: 1880-95]. The excellent rice and pure mountain waters of Nagano Prefecture have always contributed to the making of fine sake. Today, Nagano boasts the second-most sake breweries of any prefecture in the country. The wealthy and powerful Ikegami family has had a long history in Nagano and was goyotatsu shonin (official purveyor) to the local Takato Fiefdom. In the 16th century, the Ikegami family entered into the businesses of manufacturing porcelain, soy sauce, vinegar, and sake, and its enterprises flourished for many centuries. Sake brewing in Japan has long been a highly regulated industry and an important source of tax revenue. We see much in these manuscripts concerning reports to the government regarding production, equipment, revenue, inventory, etc. These manuscripts can be divided into groups: 1. two printed sheets with manuscript additions of… Read More

Two double-page & six full-page illus. 31 folding leaves. 8vo, orig. wrappers, orig. block-printed title label on upper cover, new stitching. Edo: Preface dated 1813. Second edition, enlarged and revised (1st ed.: 1805) and very rare; WorldCat locates only the 1970 and 2003 reprints. This work gives 75 recipes for sweets made from rice, beans, wheat, and other ingredients. Jippensha Ikku (1765-1831), is most famous for his humorous travel novel Shank's Mare (Hizakurige). In the present work, he applies his wit to confectionaries. "The gap between ingredients and cooking techniques on the one hand and nomenclature on the other is even wider in the 1805 confectionery text assembled by the comic novelist Jippensha Ikku...He includes two recipes for nanban sweets. The first is Southern Barbarian Candy [European-influenced sweets] (nanban ame); the modern editors note it is similar to a recipe in an earlier confectionery text, but that it is not an easily identifiable sweet due to the idiosyncratic… Read More

Description:
8vo (235 x 168 mm.), orig. blue semi-stiff wrappers, modern stitching. [Japan]: 1853-54. Silver was mined at the Ikuno Ginzan (Ikuno Silver Mine) from the 9th century until 1973 and was an important source of income for the central government. Lead, copper, zinc, and gold were extracted along with silver. There were a number entrances to the mine, and more than 20,000 local residents were in some way involved in the mining industry. In the 19th century, the mines were running deficits as they were not producing enough silver. This is a fascinating official record maintained by Chudayu (or Chiwaki) Shiraishi (1817-87), of the loans made by the bakufu to the Ikuno and nearby Ase silver mines to improve their efficiency and production levels. Shiraishi was at this time working for the bakufu, employed as deputy officer of the two silver mines, overseeing their operations and finances. Later, during the Meiji Restoration, Shiraishi became well known as a scholar of Wagaku (Japanese studies) and as a… Read More

Title framed within typographical ornaments. 4 p.l., 219, [1] p. 4to, orig. decorative brown morocco with gilt armorial device and mottos on upper cover (corners a trifle rubbed), flat spine gilt, a.e.g. N.p.: [Chiswick Press] "Privately Printed," 1883. One of forty copies of this rare catalogue in the deluxe presentation binding. Fox Strangways (1847-1905), possessed a vast collection of family portraits and Old Master paintings spread across a house in London at 42 Belgrave Square and three country houses, Melbury House and Abbotsbury Castle in Dorset, and Redlynch House in Wiltshire. The catalogue was compiled by his mother, Amelia Fox Strangways. The 4th Earl, William Thomas-Horner Fox Strangways (1795-1865), uncle of the 5th Earl and a prominent diplomat, was posted throughout Europe, most notably Italy, where he was an early proponent of artists from the period of Giotto and Cimabue. Description:
One sheet folded into two leaves. Small 4to, unbound, uncut. N.p.: n.d. [but probably Nuremberg: ca. 1780-90]. Very rare; VD18 13815725 offers J.G. Recknagel as the author but without giving a source and says "place of publication not identifiable." A notary named J.G. (Johann Georg?) Recknagel was active at Nuremberg in 1772, and an eponymous Protestant clergyman (b. 1797), was active in other parts of Franconia in the 1820; neither seems to be our author. Some of the entries of this satirical fictitious piece of ephemera include the following, in translation. "Objects mobile and immobile for sale": -"Entire wardrobes of silk and fine cotton women's dresses, mantillas, and short coats to be given away, also a variety of splendid pieces of furniture, canapés, and sofas, the curse adhering to these objects will not strike whoever will purchase them legally" -"Soon to be sold (not in the course of self-redress): a habitation painted red, with numerous chicken, duck, and goose stalls, empty wine… Read More

Description:
Numerous woodcut illustrations in the text. Title-page, 31 folding leaves, one leaf of colophon. 8vo, orig. patterned blue semi-stiff wrappers, orig. block-printed title label on upper cover (label rubbed), new stitching. Tokyo, Kyoto, & Osaka: 1864. First edition and rare. Imamura (1814-90), was a leading physician and historian of Japanese medicine of his period. Professor of medicine at Tokyo University, he was physician to the future Emperor Taisho when he was a youth. Imamura found that many of the contemporary Japanese works on acupuncture had strayed from the classic teachings of the Chinese physicians. In this work, he makes a series of corrections to refine the fourteen meridians. The numerous woodcuts depict various parts of the body and pressure points. Very nice copy. Light stain to first few leaves. ❧ Mestler, Old Japanese Medical Books, I, p. 297.

Description:
[Compiled by Giusto Fontanini]. Large engraved vignette on title & woodcut initials throughout the text. 1 p.l., v, [1], 738 pp. Folio, cont. calf (neatly rebacked by Aquarius with the orig. spine laid-down, corners repaired), spine richly gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine. Rome: F. Gonzaga, 1711. First edition of the catalogue of Cardinal Imperiali's large (ca. 20,000 titles) and magnificent library bequeathed to the public upon his death in 1737. This rich and varied catalogue of rare and early books is arranged alphabetically by author in the first part (pp. 1-582), which was a fairly advanced technique for the time. Pages 583-738 contain the titles rearranged into subject categories. "The care shown in describing and classifying the books makes the Imperiali catalogue and its subject-index a good source of information about seventeenth-century books."-Taylor, General Subject-Indexes since 1548, p. 185. Description:
[Klein-Schwechat: 1881]. An elaborate album of photographs of drawings of the celebrated brewery at Klein-Schwechat, founded in 1632, and today one of the leading breweries of Austria, producing a lager, a light smooth premium beer called Hopfenperle, and a super-premium called Steffl. The album was prepared for the renowned Viennese brewer August Deiglmayer (1827-83), who was at that time, managing director of the brewery and one of the great innovators of 19th century brewing. Deiglmayer spent much of his professional career at the Klein-Schwechat brewery. The drawings were executed at the request of Georg Wieninger (1832-87), scion of the Schärding family of brewers. Reproduced here in photographs, the drawings depict a number of the imperial-style buildings of the brewery, set around a series of courtyards, which today still more resembles a grand country estate more than a brewery. The first plate consists of a calligraphic title "Erinnerung an Klein-Schwechat" in a hop-vine… Read More

24 pp. 8vo (212 x 135 mm.), orig. green printed wrappers, stitched as issued. Autun: Dejussieu & L. Villedey, 1856.
Scarce critical essay on Ingres's painting Le Martyre de saint Symphorien, which has been housed in the Cathédrale Saint-Lazare d'Autun since 1834. The painting was originally ordered by Roch-Etienne de Vichy, the bishop of Autun, in 1824. Ingres finally completed it in 1834 and selected it for that year's Salon, where it was received negatively, leading to Ingres never again participating in the event. The anonymous author of this critique provides the historical context for the picture and meticulously describes it. Over the years, despite Ingres considering this one of his greatest achievements, critics have always been derisive.
Near fine copy of a rare work; some minor foxing.

Ten columns per page, 20 characters per column. 52 folding leaves. Large 8vo (280 x 203 mm.), later wrappers, new stitching. [Japan]: colophon dated "1564." The earliest surviving edition of one of the "two priceless records of the earlier stages of the Chinese language."-Edwin G. Pulleyblank, "Qieyun and Yunjing: The Essential Foundation for Chinese Historical Linguistics" in Journal of the American Oriental Society, Vol. 118, No. 2 (April-June 1998), p. 213. The Yunjing, along with its predecessor, the Qieyun, were the standard pronunciation guides of the Early Middle Chinese and Middle Chinese periods. This is a very rare book, with only three (or, perhaps, two) other known copies. The original motivation to compile these guides to pronunciation was religious: Chinese monks turned their attention to the analysis of the sounds of their own language as recitations of chants depended for their effectiveness on correct pronunciation. The need for rhyming tables soon extended to scholarly and… Read More
