Modern owner has drawn line through "2006" on title page and inked in "1821," the original year of publication. Wizards Bookshelf first published this facsimile in 1984 and several times thereafter.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt's trusted Secretary of the Interior (1933-46), an ardent reformer who earned the nickname "Honest Harold"; he also headed the Public Works Administration (1933-39). Signature in bold blue ink on a heavy stock 3½" X 1 3/4" card with "The Secretary of the Interior" printed in ornate large italics at center and "Autograph of" printed quite small near top edge. Near fine. Faintly age toned. On the verso, noted Lincoln/Civil War scholar Arnold F. Gates (1914-93) pens note to himself and dates it 21 July 1941: "One of a score sent in through the years." Accompanied by a handsome vintage glossy 8½" X 6½" black and white news agency photograph (International News Photos). Very good. Archivally mended 3" tear at left edge, but overall attractive. Rare first edition of this quite early and fascinating tourist map of Illinois, reprinted a number of times afterward. Green colored column along left margin titled "Population of the State of Illinois According to the Census of 1830" lists each county's population (totaling 157, 575) and a breakdown of white males and females, colored males and females, "Total Free Colored 1,653," slaves male and female ("Total Slaves 746"). U.S. Grant's confidante and right-hand man John Rawlins (1831-69) was a fellow Galena, Illinois resident and served as his chief of staff throughout the Civil War and rose to the rank of brevet major general; Grant appointed him Secretary of War, but he served only six months before dying at age 38. His younger brother Lemmon (1834-95) was one of his many siblings. One of these dozen documents notes John Rawlins and three of them note Lemmon Rawlins -- as follows:. 1) DS in unknown hand (NOT Rawlins'), 8" X 12", 4pp lined lettersheet, Guilford, IL, 1857. Very good. Mild age toning, soiling and edgewear. New roads were being built in this remote rural area west of Galena and taxes were being assessed to land owners of Guilford. Faint original vertical fold; single small (¼" X ½") paper loss near top of this fold, not affecting image (but touching upon the "Harper's Weekly" running head). Overall clean, attractive -- quite fetching. Centerfold two-page spread (pp. 441-442) of this famed weekly. Large center steel engraving (14 3/4" X 9") titled within the plate "A Council of War / at Massaponax Church" is based on the famed Alexander Gardner photograph showing Grant and Meade's staffs seated in a group of scattered church pews, Grant examining a map. Richmond: Daily Dispatch, 1865. Paperback. Folio. Self-cover. 4pp. Good only. Age toned and somewhat soiled, with a couple of centerfold edge tears. Overall quite respectable looking, though, with no edge chips. Decent full issue of this Confederate newspaper from the capital, dated several months prior to the Confederate government's evacuation in early April and the subsequent burning and occupation by Union troops. Typical late war news. Some wear issues, but easily legible and quite "handleable" -- very uncommon in any condition. Southern newspapers were generally printed on inferior quality paper, hence usually exhibit more age toning than their Northern counterparts.

This Massachusetts businessman, attorney and legislator served as president of several railroads in the late 19th century, including the powerful Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis Railroad (better known as the Big Four Railroad). Signature in brown ink on a 4¼" X 1½" slip, n.p., n.y. Very good. Faintly feathered. Clipped from a typed letter, with a typed "Yours Truly" at upper left.

Fiery Kansas senator (1873-91). Bold purple clipped signature, 2¼" X 3/4", n.p., n.d. Typical "J.J. Ingalls" signed on a dotted line, most likely a printed legal document.

A tight and attractive collection by the minor English poet and novelist (1820-97). Each text page bordered in red.
