Hildburghausen: Ferd. Kesselringsche Verlagshandlung, 1852. First Edition. Paper pastedown, hardcover. Very Good Minus. Scarce, with only one copy found on OCLC FirstSearch at the Universitat Gottingen, and not listed in Wegehaupt. 8vo. 19 by 14 cm. 34 pp. 10 chromolithographic plates, including title page. The vignettes on the plates reek of the grisly and violent, as common among fairy tales and juvenile puppet theater. Foxing to the text pages, as to be expected given acidic paper. Plates are mounted unto blue card, and these leaves are generally cleaner.

Description:
London: Later published by John Lane, The Bodley Head, 1896. Half Morocco, Cloth Boards. Near Fine. Oblong, 26 by 40 cm. (This is slightly larger than the later book.) Title, 20 pp. 10 pages are devoted to the original full-page watercolors, and the title is also largely watercolored. The other pages have pen-and-ink vignettes aplenty as well as the original beautifully hand-written text, which was reproduced in the later printing. In printed form, the illustrations are fun, evocative and full of verve, yet the original artwork is truly a revelation. The colors are richer, as one might expect, but the action, and the illustrations team with movement, comes off so much more immediate and intense in this quintessential foxhunting tale of a nouveau riche newbie and all the mishaps that occur to him as he navigates the "Sport of Kings". Pencilled on the backs and/or the margins are the name Edmund Evans, the printer, and shorthand instructions for the printing. Bookplate on FEP of the Duke of Gloucester.… Read More

Description:
London: John Murray, 1826-1827. First Edition. Half Morocco. Marbled boards. . Good. Seldomly encountered complete suite of color plate views. Russian views predominate. The descriptions relate many of the locations to the recently concluded Napoleonic Wars. In all the illustrations there is a human presence, providing scale and adding interest to the otherwise static scene. Folio, 43.5 by 27.5 cm. [42] pp. -- unpaginated. 21 mounted color plates on 20 leaves -- one leaf has two smaller color plates. Each plate accompanied by a description on a separate text leaf. The text leaves are a typical manila paper of the period, while the plate leaves are a brown paper. The views, or illustrations themselves, are printed on a blue/gray paper. Views are of Dannemora, an iron mine there; the Kremlin; a scene in the Kitaigorod in Moscow; the battlefield at Borodino; Dorogobouje; Moscow ruins following the Napoleonic invasion; The czar's palace in the Kremlin; Newski (Nevski) Prospekt in St.… Read More

Ford. With approx.. 67 watercolors, 38 pen and ink and 6 pencil drawings. (These elude a precise count since the images are sometimes a collage and thus a matter of opinion whether they represent discrete illustrations. In just one instance, we counted as a single pen and ink drawing a group that might as easily be regarded as a dozen individual drawings. Some of the items might appropriately be described as vignettes or cameos; when there are a few of these, all somehow related, on a single page, we count them as just one. When a picture carries over onto two pages, we count that as… Read More

London. Pebbled Wraps. Good. Very scarce trade catalogue with color plate illustrations. N.d., circa 1880s. Title, with a litho of a female customer greeting a taxidermy bear, followed by two page text store philosphy expositions and then 25 chromolithographic illustration on one side, with name of style and short description on facing page. All but two styles are shown using a painting of a pretty woman that brings to mind perhaps a young Jennie Jerome Churchill or any of a number of Edith Wharton or Henry James heroines. One illustration is of a man, and one is of the design without use of a human mannequin. Styles are designated as the Marcelle, the Danae, Heloise, Medea, Tristran, Latona, York, Cynthea, Maguier, Vernon, Armide, Thisbe, Roselle, Athena, Tavoir, Vesta, Hebe, Jervoise, Thetis, Alma, Fife, D'Alton, Leinster, the Marie Stuart collar, the Russian Circular, the Breton, and the Dallas. Description:
Paris: Editions du Valois; Impriermies Union et Dechaux, 1957. Limited Edition. Wraps. With slipcase. Near Fine. No. 3871 of 4569. 4to. 255 pp. Anthology of late Medieval and Renaissance to Enlightenment French poetry that is sensual, lewd, erotic or plain naughy. The range is from the sublime to naughty, with the Dubout illustrations decidedly of the latter camp, and thus the soft porn campiness of the whole production. Being French, the anthology exudes style and class, even when it most boisterously violates all standards of decorum. Represented here are the greats Ronsard, du Bellay, Voltaire, Diderot and many others, less well-known, from the 15th through the 18th century, all underscoring the point that the fun in vulgarity is nothing new. A clean copy, with the only qualification that there is a minor closed tear on the spine head, and the lightest of crease marks on the base of the wraps. The slipcase has minor wear but matches the volume perfectly and is an attractive bonus.
