Alchemia Press, 2009. [322], original cloth in hand-painted DJ. Bright and clean externally, small smudge to half-title, otherwise fine. One of a hundred copies, this being number one. With a hand-painted dust jacket in ink and watercolour by the artist with a sonnet pair calligraphed on the rear of the jacket. Printed to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the publication of Shakespeare's Sonnets in 1609, painter and poet Mark Jeoffroy has replied to each one of the 154 sonnets with a counter-sonnet from the lover and a full-page facing illustration. London: J. Hodges, W. Millar et al, 1791. Four volumes complete - Volume One - [4], 307pp, [1]; Volume Two - [4], 292pp; Volume Three - [4], 303pp, [1] and Volume Four - [4], 248pp, [28]. Full calf, smooth backs, divided into six panels by gilt rule, morocco label to second panel, contrasting oval volume label to fourth. Slightly rubbed to extremities, spine ends worn, corners slightly bumped. Internally there is an ink stain to G3 (not affecting sense), some light browning and foxing, previous owners name to titles, but generally fairly clean. First published in 1751, this is the twelfth edition. Fleeman doubts the London imprint, suspecting it was actually printed in Edinburgh. Fleeman 50.3R/20. Reprint. Full Calf. Good+. 12mo.

Two volumes complete - Volume One, [A]2, B-C2, [c], D-K2, a-c2, d1, B-6D2, 6E1, 6F-10T2, *10T2, 10U-12Z2, 13A-14Z1; [580]p and Volume Two, pi1, 15A-17Z2, 18A-18Z1, 19A-22G2, 22H-22Z1, 23A-27F2, 27G-28Z1, 29A-31D2, 31E1; [592]p. Modern half calf and boards, raised bands with spines in six panels, leather title label to second panel, volume numbers lettered direct to fourth panel, date to foot. Some minor wear to extremities, but still very solid. Internally some light foxing and staining, but generally fairly clean and bright. Tear to margin of 16I and 23T has been bound in upside down and back to front. Title pages in red and black. Fourth edition of Johnson's magnum opus, one of (probably) 1250 copies (Strahan's printing account, see Fleeman) and it was published on the 25th January 1773 at £4, 10s. Fleeman 55.4D/4a. Fourth Edition. Half Calf and Boards. Good. Folio.

Modern full calf by Temple Bookbinders, raised bands, spine in six panels, calf title label to second panel, contrasting calf volume label to third, blind roll to board edges. Externally near fine. Internally generally lightly browned and lightly foxed throughout, sometimes heavier, stain to bottom corner at gutter for most of 'A' in volume one, but generally clean. Small amount of loss to N4 in volume two, nicking text with loss to one word, several small nicks and tears to page edges, previous owner's name to head of titles. The Fourth edition, the first Dublin and first quarto edition of Johnson's monumental work. Fleeman 55.4D/5a. First Thus. Full Calf. Good. 4to.
