Includes recipes and menus, for two, for dinners, company luncheons, breakfast, tea, desserts, as well as miscellaneous recipes and helpful suggestions. There are sections of The Gas Stove and Electrical Appliances for the Household. one small dog ear and pencil annotation to same page, otherwise very good, in slightly bumped blue-stamped/illustrated blue cloth. New York: Knickerbocker Press, 1902. Small octavo (20 x 13 cm.), xvi, 244 pages. An early printing (the first was issued in 1901), of this influential work. "The keynote of this book is Proctitis, inflammation of the anal and rectal canals" (page xv). Much of this text appeared originally in various issues of Health (N.Y.) and Omega (N.Y.) between 1898 and 1900. Jamison was an 1878 graduate of the Medical College of Fort Wayne, and ran a practice in Manhattan. His treatments were firmly within popular American medical approaches to these problems, and included drinking lots of spring water and warm water enemas twice daily (see Hoolihan). Light soil to endpapers and to textblock edges; light edgewear to textured burgundy cloth, titled in gilt. Near fine. London: William H. Ainsworth, 1827. Octavo, 276 pages, with two folding plates and a frontispiece portrait of the author. Third edition, corrected and enlarged. The author's full name was William Alexis Jarrin [Guglielmo Alexis]. In early editions, including this one, the name is abbreviated "G.A." Later he anglicized his name, abbreviated as "W.A." "In 1820 Jarrin published this work, The Italian Confectioner, through which he is best known. The book sits within an English tradition of publishing recipes for food and confectionery, but it reveals more about the techniques involved and about the character of the author, than was usual in the genre. Written when confectionery production was on the point of being industrialized through the activities of such contemporaries as Joseph Terry of York, it represented the high point of artisan skills in the craft, which Jarrin believed could not be improved upon. The original publication of the first major work for the theater by Cocteau. The play was staged in Paris, 1926, with stage design by Jean Hugo and costumes by Coco Chanel, and was the basis of his film masterpiece Orphee (1950). Some light age-toning to text block. The second published work by the medical doctor and researcher, Jean Baptiste Fonssagrives, perhaps best known for his first work, Traité d'hygiène navale, (Treatise on Naval Hygiene), in which he took a look at the overall living conditions of French sailors, including their diet and quarters, and suggested a healthier living situation might produce a better fighting force. In this work, he looks broadly at what had been learned of the effect of diet on the sick, and generalized outward to the larger population to encourage a more circumspect diet for all, even the currently healthy.
