Description:
Boston: Roberts Brothers, 1885. Second issue. Octavo (19cm). Green cloth stamped in gilt and maroon; floral printed endpapers; [ii],490,[4]pp; four pages of advertisements at rear. Edges rubbed, cloth rippling slightly at spine, but generally sound, internally with a few fingersoil marks but largely clean: Very Good. Jackson wrote Ramona, first published in 1884, to draw attention to the mistreatment of Mission Indians in Southern California that she had already described in her 1881 book A Century of Dishonor and 1883 Report on the Conditions and Needs of the Mission Indians. Ramona was enormously popular. Though its immediate result was a wave of California tourism, rather than a cry of outrage, Jackson's work did ultimately influence reform legislation (ANB). For the first edition, see BAL 10456; ZAMORANO 80 #46; BAIRD & GREENWOOD 1296.
