First edition of this anonymous response (signed L.L.D.J at end) to Charles Davenant's book of the same year, which had criticized the government and leading ecclesiastics. In a highly hostile tone, the author declares that Davenant's book "arraigns the ministry in a most outrageous manner; transgresses all the rules of modesty, abandons truth, and casts his blasphemous aspersions on that which all good men hold most sacred, the church" (p. 6). The author defends the ministry at a tumultuous time (with two elections in 1701, alternating Tory and Whig governments, and the ongoing war), especially its foreign policy, against Davenant's attacks. Octavo (190 x 119 mm). Disbound pamphlet, earlier sew-holes in margin. Initial and final leaves soiled, printer's error affecting text to p. 18. A very good copy. ESTC T102175; Goldsmiths' 3832.

SDUK was founded in 1827 by John, Earl Russell and Henry Brougham, later Lord Chancellor of England. The Society published books that were deemed to be of high educational worth but with an affordable price. This is a lapidary "with strings" date, that sets Bags against lush backdrops by Grammy Award-winning arranger Don Sebesky, who played trombone with the Maynard Ferguson and Stan Kenton bands. Freddie Hubbard's burnished flugeling adds lustre to the proceedings. The core band here is Miles alumni Herbie Hancock (keyboards), and Ron Carter (bass); Billy Cobham occupies the drum stool. This title, Jackson's most autobiographical novel, is rare inscribed. Jackson was a master of horror writing whose personal forays into the occult were the subject of wide speculation. The biographical information that accompanied her debut novel was written by her husband, who noted that Jackson "is an authority on witchcraft and magic, has a remarkable private library of works in English on the subject, and is perhaps the only contemporary writer who is a practicing amateur witch, specializing in small-scale black magic and fortune-telling with a Tarot deck" (quoted by Temple). A fascinating study of the psychological impact of military service. Jacomb (1888-1961) is probably best remembered, in Australia, for his "extraordinarily negative and derisive assessment" of the country, God's Own Country; An Appreciation of Australia (1914), based on his time working on his family's fruit farm at Mildura (biographical details from the University of Queensland, AustLit). Having spent six years there he returned to London in time to enlist for service in the First World War, joining the 23rd Royal Fusiliers. A woven painting that blurred the lines between industrial production and the arts One of the first paintings woven on a Jacquard loom, using the punch-card system. These famous paintings are extremely rare in their original large format version, as here. The painting shows Henri d'Orléans, Duke of Aumale, and his entourage admiring the famous woven portrait of Jacquard, with the loom and the punched-card attachment towering over the visitors. Created after the painting by C. Bonnefond, drawn and card-punched by A. Manin, and woven by Carquillat in 1844, it demonstrates the same fineness of detail as the portrait itself, a shaded portrait of Jacquard seated at table with a small model of his loom. The portrait had been woven in 1839 in fine silk by a firm in Lyon using a Jacquard punched-card loom. The image took 24,000 cards to produce, and each card had over 1,000 hole positions. Darjeeling, West Bengal: , 1882. A very fine herbarium with expansive additional samples A superb and uncommon hortus siccus of ferns from West Bengal, compiled and mounted by Phoebe Jaffrey, wife of Andrew Thomas Jaffrey, the founding curator in 1878 of the Lloyd Botanic Gardens in Darjeeling. This copy has been copiously expanded by a later British amateur botanist, with a huge number of samples added both within and without. The samples in Jaffrey's herbarium are captioned as "British Sikkim", a region with one of the most diverse floras in India, and especially rich in ferns. While living in India, Phoebe Jaffrey created botanical albums for sale, usually of large folio size, mounted with excellent specimens of local ferns. She sold the albums singly, and in sets of two or three, those such as this dating from 1882 with her label at the rear. Calcutta: Thacker, Spink and Co.,, 1916. An uncommon work First edition, first impression, with the stamp of the Y.M.C.A. Indian Students Union and Hotel to the title page. The work, intended as the first in a series, was written "in the style of an advice manual to a newly married couple" and "was deemed so important that it was translated into English under the title Muslim Home" (Lambert-Hurley). The translation aimed to counter imperialist concepts of the supposed subjection of women in Islam. The original text, titled Hadiyat ul-Zaujain (A Guide for the Married Couple) was then printed in the Madras Weekly Newspaper Press in 1917. Although no further parts of the series were issued, the work was highly popular, and a number of extracts were reprinted in Muslim publications in Britain. These copies sumptuously presented and although unmarked as such from the Harewood House library of Mary, Princess Royal and Countess of Harewood, only daughter of George V and Queen Mary; she was made a Companion of the Crown of India in 1919. Sultan Jahan, Begum of Bhopal (1858-1930), ruled Bhopal State from 1901 until 1926. During this time, she enacted a series of innovative reformist policies such as the creation of workshops in prisons, the establishment of schools and colleges for Muslim and Hindu women, and improvements to general sanitation in the region. An extremely attractive and decorative map of The English Channel, showing the entire south coast of England and the north western regions of France - from Nantes to Bruges. The map is littered with compass roses and rhumb lines, and features a large and very ornate title cartouche in the lower right corner, with horses, cherubs, soldiers and King Neptune seated in his chariot. There is plenty of detail within the body of the map, especially along coastal areas. A very fine map indeed. Size: 525 x 635 mm. Copperplate engraving with original outline colour. Slight water staining to lower border, minor toning and soiling, otherwise in very good condition

Paris: , c 1693. An excellent large scale chart of the Channel Islands, together with the Normandy, and a small portion of the Brittany coastlines. A large compass rose, and associated rhumb lines radiate across the chart. Local maritime hazards such as sunken rocks and sand banks are shown. Produced for Jaillot in his 'Le Neptune Francois ou Atlas Nouveau des Cartes Marines'. Size: 630 x 940 mm. Copperplate engraving with lovely original outline colour. Some strengthening to the verso, otherwise in very good condition.

Adam Smith meets German cameralism First edition, an important work of what Schumpeter calls "Smithian cameralism" (History of Economic Analysis, p. 501), bringing the principles of the Wealth of Nations firmly into German economic thought, reconciling Smith's free trade with the German cameralist school of the economy as a tool of state interest. Jakob (1759-1827) was professor at the University of Halle from 1789 onwards, initially focusing on Kantian philosophy, moving to political economy with the turn of the 19th century. Jakob's close adherence with Kantianism was characteristic of the first generation of Adam Smith's followers in Germany. The present work is in effect a textbook of political economy. Kharkoff: for the author,, 1809. On law enforcement First edition of the distinguished German economist and philosopher's work on law enforcement. First a professor of philosophy in Halle, Jakob (1759-1827) accepted the Russian government's invitation in 1807 to become a professor of economic science at Kharkoff University after the University of Halle was suppressed. His quick mastery of the Russian language made him a favourite of the minister Speransky, who appointed him as a member of the government's finance commission in 1809 and then as the president of the commission for the revision of criminal law in 1810. He returned to Germany in 1816. This is a superb literary association: Penzler is an American author, editor, and owner of The Mysterious Bookshop in New York, and the Mysterious Press, which published mystery, crime, and suspense authors, including P.
