Description:
Two volumes, bound in brown leather and marbled boards, both books very good, a beautiful set. Monterey edition. Deluxe edition seldom seen with 5 raised bands and different from the red morocco binding. Introduction by Susan Coolidge and illustrations by Henry Sandham. Powell, California Classics p. 277: Among the many editions of Ramona, two are outstanding. The Monterey edition of 1900 contains an introduction by Susan Coolidge which is one of the best things written about Mrs. Jackson. It is illustrated by Henry Sandham, the Canadian artist who had travelled with Mrs. Jackson in the early 1880 s and made field drawings to illustrate her Century articles. Sandham is the ideal portrayer of Southern California of that time. Zamorano Eighty 46: Ramona, a maudlin, sentimental story is, of course not a great novel. But it is an exceedingly important California book for two reasons. A popular book, it spread the fame of California and no doubt inspired a considerable number of people to migrate here… Read More

Six Score 63: "Mary Jaques was an Englishwoman who spent two years in America from 1889 to 1891. The last part of this rare book describes a trip to Mexico shortly before her return to England, and an earlier trip to the West Coast, but a good part of the work deals with her ranch experiences. Much surprised her, and she took it in her cultured stride." Merrill's Aristocrats. Howes J60.
