Description:
London: Charles Knight, 1839. First Edition. Near fine. John Jackson. With upwards of three hundred illustrations, engraved on wood, by John Jackson. An important and influential work on wood engraving conceived, written, and illustrated by a master artist of the medium, John Jackson (1801 - 1848). Early chapters catalogue the history of the medium at length, from antiquity to the creation of block books in the fifteenth century. Chatto and Jackson examine the emergence of typography and conduct a detailed analysis of the period in which Albert Durer flourished, from about 1498 to 1528. There is a chapter on the principal wood cuts by Holbein, exploring improvements to the art throughout the sixteenth century. After further investigation into the history of the process leading from the eighteenth century until the date of publication, a highly technical series of instructions delineate the basic process of wood engraving, the best mode for printing wood cuts, superior tools and materials, good… Read More

Description:
London: Country Life, 1918. First Edition. One of the finest garden books of the twentieth century. Christopher Hussey and Gertrude Jekyll created this impressive pictorial treatise dealing with "garden design in relation to architecture, and, to some extent, with architectural design in relation to gardening." Gertrude Jekyll in her association with Hussey and more famously, Edward Lutyens "devised appropriate rather than merely fashionable solutions; a surveyor's grasp of line and contour, allied to understanding of colour and plants, gave distinction to her designs." Jekyll's books are highly collectible and remain among the most important of all writings in the oeuvre of the garden. This is the most famous book on the subject, comprising introductory text and a superb assembly of photographs of garden ornaments of every kind, including wood and iron gates, steps, balustrades, urns, vases, courts, paved ways, seats, loggias, orangeries, dovecotes, parterres, sundials, topiary, pergolas,… Read More

Description:
London: The Tyron Gallery, 1971. A remarkably beautiful book by one of the most celebrated modern flower painters, printed by the Curwen Press and published in an edition of only 406 numbered and signed copies. As Sir George Taylor explains in his Note, the book began because "I had long thought that Paul Jones could paint very successfully a series of pictures in a modern version of The Temple of Flora [for an exhibition]... His pictures, which included the 'Datura', the frontispiece of this book, were greatly admired, and encouraged by this we then planned this present book..." Folio, signed limited edition, original half vellum & slipcase, a near fine copy with an additional large format poster.
