[Washington] Federal Bureau of Investigation, U.S. Dept. of Justice. May 1, 1940. Quarto, 56pp. Photo-illustrated wrappers. Very good. Rather scarce illustrated text aimed at those interested in joining the Federal Bureau of Investigation or knowing more of it. Illustrations show agents-in-training throwing one another around, honing their skills at staged crime scenes, firing a Tommy machine gun from a moving vehicle, analyzing evidence, etc. One rather unsettling image shows a toy play town, a mock up, with the caption "Raid Problem Suburban Estate presented in FBI Academy" gives a sense of what J. Edgar Hoover and his cohorts were planning for ca. 1940. OCLC, [5].

Description:
(Newark, New Jersey): 1864. 15pp. 6 x 4 inches. Self-titled wraps. Moderate foxing and creasing, small margin losses, tear on last page expertly mended with tissue; very good. Mid-American Civil War, the author was pitching "Van Buskirk's fragrant sozodont" (pp12-15), a dental paste that promised to whiten, protect, and preserve teeth. Judges, doctors, an ex-Governor of New Jersey; all provide glowing testimonials. Before pushing the product, Colburn, a Newark, New Jersey dentist, gives a brief history of dentistry and then opines on dentures, toothbrushes and toothpicks, care and protection, etc. The printing is interesting as the title-page, and briefly elsewhere, offers an 18th century typesetting aesthetic. The remainder of the type is about as small as the eye can tolerate to read. Earlier editions were printed in 1860 and 1861; all are rare. The 1860 edition is not in Felcone, the final year this bibliography examined. OCLC, 2 copies.  zxc
