Printed in an edition of 650 copies for members of the Book Club of California by John Henry Nash. This copy with typed letter from Book Club secretary Oscar Lewis presenting this keepsake. Originally pubished in Scribner's Magazine, August 1873, then reprinted in the volume "Bits of Travel at Home by H. H." in 1878. Helen Hunt Jackson ("H. H") is best remembered for her novel "Ramona."

Text is from articles by Helen Hunt Jackson published in the New York Independent in October and November 1872. They were later collected in her 1878 book "Bits of Travel." This volume the 137th from the Book Club of California. Printed by Mallette Dean at Kentfield, CA with Van Dijck monotype composition by Mackenzie & Harris.

Handsome cover design by former Decorative Designers employee Rome Richardson. Richardson left DD in 1902. His independent work bears his own "RR" monogram.

A lavishly-illustrated work by commercial writer, author, and California booster George Wharton James (1858-1923). The Hotel Association of San Francisco, together with the Southern California Hotel Association once again invited the Hotel Men's Mutual Benefit Association to hold their annual session in Los Angeles and to combine the meeting with a rail tour of the state. Thus a reprise of the 1896 event was accomplished, again with the contributions in energy, inspiration, and ink of George Wharton James. Rocq 16953, Controversial James #42.

In spite of the "Published Annually" statement on the title page, this appears to be the only issue of this very detailed guide book. From the library of Frances E. Watkins (1899-?), author of several works on the Indians of the Southwest, with her bookplate and signature on front endpapers. Rocq 16291.

Original dark blue cloth with gilt title and ornaments, 12mo, xxvii, (463) pp. [2] pp. publisher advert for the "Novels and Stories of Henry James" complete set at rear. BAL 10795, noting two formats: "Crown 8vo and foolscap 8vo Pocket Edition." This is the pocket edition. BAL also observes that "The volume numbers are not present on the several volumes, nor are the volumes so marked as to indicate they are part of a set." The publisher advert at rear lists this title as the first in the series.

Original brown cloth octavo (6 x 8.5 inches), xi, 369 pp. Frontispiece and 32 b/w photo plates. INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY AUTHOR on front free endpaper: "I hope you will enjoy this book as much as I did the trip. Yours in adventure." Additionally, the book is inscribed and autographed by Jack London's daughter: "To Wayne, Sincerely, Becky London. Glen Ellen, California, July 30, 1983." Scarce first edition of the account by the young Martin Johnson of his tour of the South Seas on Jack London's "Snark." Johnson was hired by Jack London to serve as cook aboard the Snark. The 19 year old midwesterner had never sailed, and possessed no training or experience as a cook, but London selected him over many other fully qualified applicants. This was Johnson's first of many books based on his travels in remote parts of the world.
