New Orleans to Glascow, Scotland. Envelope or Cover. Very good. This three-page stampless cross-hatched letter measures 15½" x 10" unfolded. It was sent by J N McLauren, Jr. on 15 June 1833 from New Orleans to the Dalmuir Paper Warehouse near Glasgow, Scotland. It bears a circular New Orleans postmark, crossed-out address, and "50" rate mark indicating that it was sent to New York City where a forwarding agent (MacGregor & Darling) ensured it was carried privately to England where it received a "Liverpool / Ship Letter" transit stamp, rectangular ½d Scottish road tax handstamp and Glasgow receiving mark. In nice shape. In this letter, McLauren describes the horrific New Orleans Cholera epidemic of 1832-1833. "That scourge of the human race, accursed Cholera, visited us two days after said interview and on the third or fourth day of its appearance it seized upon my poor friend Archibald Granton. . .. From the moment it seized him I never left his bedside, nor even sat down a minute for the 56… Read More

1945. Very good. Envelope only, no letter. The envelope was addressed to Private First Class Walter Mikucki at the Osaka Yodogawa Bunsho POW Camp in Japan. It has a typed "Prisoner of War Postage Free" free frank in the upper right corner and has received a Chicago "War Savings machine postmark dated Jan 13, 1944. The envelope was opened by a U.S. censor and resealed using censor tape annotated, "Examined by 6587." The address was subsequently obliterated with a red cross and black bands using grease pencil or crayon. It has a circular handstamp in the lower right corner dated Nov 20 1945 with text that appears to read "[LIBER]ATED HQ. USMC., WASH., D.C." There is a USMC "pointing finger" return-to-sender hand stamp that point to the return address. Pfc. Mikucki was a member of the 4th Marine Regiment when, as war clouds rumbled in the Pacific, it was sent from China to Corregidor to defend Manila Bay in the Philippines. Shortly after its arrival, Japan launched its infamous sneak attack on… Read More

Description:
Washinington, DC, 1937. Unbound. Very good. One-page handbill (approximately 9" x 11.5") formatted to appear like a page from the Congressional Record. Storage folds, some beginning to split at the margin. Clean with some light toning. This handbill provides the text of Jenckes's speech in the House of Representatives on 6 December 1937 advocating for a Union Shop to be imposed upon the Woodward & Lothrop Department Store in Washington, DC in lieu of the long-established Company Union that represented its workers. In the speech, she additionally complained that Painter's Union No. 368, who wished to represent the workers, was unable to get newspaper coverage because Woodies was one of the largest advertising buyers in the District. Jenckes was the first female from Indiana to serve in the U.S. House of Representative. She was elected to the position in 1933 and held the position until she was defeated for re-election in 1938. The National Women's History Museum notes that "A Democrat, her… Read More
