Contemporary straight-grained purple morocco with black leather spine label, gilt decorations and rules on spine, and single gilt rules on covers. Leather faded to tan on the spine and portions of covers; rubbing to extremities, a few small scuffs to leather including one near the head of spine; slight scrape to spine label with modest impact on lettering; small stain to front cover. Moderate foxing to endpapers, title, and final text leaf; some very slight foxing to preface and a few marginal traces elsewhere, but the main body of the text is unblemished. Near very good. Engraved armorial bookplate of George Stanton on the front free endpaper. FIRST EDITION. John Thomas James (1786-1828) was an English vicar who had studied painting in Rome and Naples. He also wrote "The Italian Schools of Painting" (1820) and planned a further volume on the English, French, and Spanish schools, but never completed the work.…
