The missions, which normally included 300-500 Koreans, accompanied by roughly 1500 Japanese escorts, symbolized the amicable relationship between the two nations and, in the early years, served to legitimize the Tokugawa shogunate. These delegations, which usually took nine or ten months round-trip, were enormously expensive undertakings for both countries. There are nearly 900 Imperial tombs in 457 locations in Japan, ranging from simple burial mounds to cemeteries to small temples. This manuscript contains landscape images of a selection of 34 Imperial burial sites, along with four famous landscapes and one ancient imperial residence area, all located in Yamato Province (today's Nara Prefecture). Each of the sites, with surrounding grounds, moats and lakes, and plantings, is beautifully depicted in rich pigments, using the Chinese "wrinkled rock" style of illustration. Two scrolls (185 x 17,660 mm.; 175 x 9210 mm.), each with gold-speckled inner endpapers at front, dark blue paper on outsides. At the end of the first scroll, a note states these texts were first written in 1192 (Kenkyū 建久 3) & copied on an auspicious day in the 12th month of Genna 元和 5 (this part of Genna 5 corresponds to 1620); the second scroll is also dated at end "the 12th month of Genna 5." These two scrolls are related to a kind of Daoist-influenced star worship that was associated with esoteric Buddhism. The making of Japanese swords is a complex and labor-intensive process, taking many days or weeks. Considered a sacred art, it was traditionally accompanied by many Shinto and Buddhist religious rituals. Our scroll tells the story of the earliest days of the making of superior swords in Japan when, in 1208, the retired Emperor Go-Toba summoned 13 of the finest sword smiths in Japan in sequential visits, listed here with their names and provinces, to share their secrets in making higher-quality swords. Jiang (1902-95), linguist, a leading Chinese scholar of Dunhuang studies, lived in France in 1935-37, gathering reproductions of many of the manuscripts spread throughout the continent, especially at the BnF in Paris and the British Museum. Jiang had studied phonology with Wang Guowei (1877-1927), a towering figure in early Republican intellectual history, at Tsinghua University in Beijing. The book explains the traditional Chinese field of phonological studies for a contemporary audience. Jiang Qian expresses a kind of Buddhist universalist view of phonology as the description of human speech sound regardless of language. He writes that his own book was born not only from older literature, but from his experience with dialect differences in China, the different character readings in Korea and Japan, the phonetic script of English, his work in government offices, and from conversations with family, teachers, and friends. Facsimile reprint of a series of phonological studies by important Qing scholar Jiang Yougao (d. 1851), who wrote numerous studies on various aspects of Chinese historical phonology, a field of study that had developed substantially in the 18th and early 19th centuries. By Jiang's time, it was firmly established that the language of ancient China had been substantially different from that of the Qing period. Jiang's research progressed on this premise, deepening the description of the sound system of ancient Chinese.
