One sheet folded to form 12 pages. From the book: "The material world was a place fragmented and constantly changing; this changing aspect of the universe came to be called samsara." Description:
Offenbach, Germany:: Ines von Ketelhodt,, 1990.. Edition of 50. 16 x 48 cm (6.3 x 18.9"); 10 pages. Accordion binding, printed on one side. Bound in printed linen-over-board cover. Photography, handset, letterpress, and bookbinding by Ines von Ketelhodt. Numbered and signed by the artist. Ines von Ketelhodt: "The silhouette of a kissing scene, printed in red, forms the background for Karoline von Günderode's ballade superimposed in black print. From close up, the 12 point type is legible on an abstract red color field. When the concertina is unfolded and viewed from a distance, the figures appear nearly life-size. The effect is an interplay between closeness and distance." Karoline von Günderode (1780 - 1806) came from a poor but aristocratic family. She felt frustrated by prescribed female roles of her place and time. Romantic poetry became an outlet for these frustrations.

"At first glance it looks like a flat star-shaped spool for thread, and indeed it does seem to have thread wound upon it; to be sure, they are only old, broken-off bits of thread, knotted and tangled together, of the most varied sorts and colors. But it is not only a spool, […] Odradek is extraordinarily nimble and can never be laid hold of. […] Am I to suppose, then, that he will always be rolling down the stairs, with ends of thread trailing after him, right before the feet of my children, and my children's… Read More

Description:
Laredo, Texas:: Tom Knapp,, N.p... Edition of 50. 11 x 8.75"; 42 pages. 10 original 5 x 7" linocuts. Case bound with paper-covered boards of Mexican handmade Mata paper. Paper title with linocut illustration on front board. Tom Knapp: "The reading about the tumultuous Cristeros uprising in western Mexico of 1927-1929 consumed many fascinating days, and the decision to create a series of images of the rebellion followed shortly. ... "The prints, by any means, do not constitute a history of the CRISTIADA, but are only images which came to mind during the reading of the material available on this very important but largely suppressed or forgotten period in the saga of the turbulent history of western Mexico. The cruel attempt to destroy the Catholic church in the country by the dictator Elias Calles left many dead on both sides of the conflict, Army and peons alike.

El Sobrante, California:: Lisa Kokin,, 2022.. One-of-a-Kind. 7.25 x 6". Materials: Patinated copper, thread, safety pins, mull, silk. Signed on the back in upper left rectangle. Lisa Kokin: "Part of my 'Wordless Library' series, this book has text made with manipulated safety pins." Each character fashioned from a safety pin is up to the viewer to interpret. Asemic writing? Hieroglyphs? Codes? A new language? Lisa Kokin, Wordless Library Series: "In the 'Wordless Library' series, I make conceptual book-like objects by sewing on metal with my beat up old jalopy of a Kenmore sewing machine, circa 1975. It is immensely satisfying, even cathartic, to puncture the metal with my machine. I start each piece without a preconceived notion of what it will become. I patinate, I puncture, and I perforate. "The stitch less stitches follow lines reminiscent of text; sometimes they are even grouped into 'words.' Other times they look… Read More

Mixed media collage. Bound with leather run through two holes in each leaf sewn to rubber glove. Covers made of rubber glove, rubber balloons and top of rubber hot water bottle. Includes cloth pathology bag. Lisa Kokin, Mixed Media Books: "My definition of 'book' is open-ended, a freedom which is in many ways attributable to my lack of formal book art training. I am blissfully unaware of all the rules I am breaking as I go about my routine of sewing, stapling, riveting and otherwise reassembling objects to transform them into something readable. My books address themes which have preoccupied me for many years -- loss, the rescuing of memory, cultural and sexual identity, and a critique of the prevailing social values." In this mixed media book Kokin uses text from a Scientology… Read More

El Sobrante, California:: Lisa Kokin,, 2005.. One-of-a-Kind. 11.75 x 9.5 x .25" altered book. Mixed media book collage including sewing. Signed and dated by the artist. Lisa Kokin: "Using an early 20th century book for children called 'Around the World' as a substrate, I abraded parts of the text and added found photos of children's faces which I sanded down to remove the features, as well as part of a page from a Hebrew school notebook similar to the ones I used as a child. Holes drilled into the book recall bullet holes. "I was taught that no one lived in Israel/Palestine before the establishment of the state of Israel in 1948." Lisa Kokin, Book Collages: "In my never-ending quest to find different ways to eviscerate books, I stumbled upon the book collage. First I find a book which interests me, either for some element of text, image or marginalia, or for the look of the book itself. Sometimes I remove some of the pages and glue and/or sew the… Read More

Bound with wire through reinforced holes in the edges of the leaves. Initialed and dated by the artist. Lisa Kokin: "Part of my 'Wordless Library' series, this book has unreadable 'text' made by puncturing the aluminum with a sewing machine without thread." The twelve leaves produce two text pages. The artist's punctures are made to the recto side of the aluminum sheet producing another image of the punctures on the verso. It is much along the lines of blind embossing. Kokin says "I am intrigued by text based work that uses asemic text, which is something that looks like text but isn't made up of actual words."

Lisa Kokin: "A Jacob's ladder-type book with a humorous poem that I wrote after being verbally harassed on the street. … The shoe last is kind of a metaphor. I was being sexually harassed for my weight by some guys leaning out of a car -- symbol of oppression, crushed under the weight of sexism...something to that effect. This book is a circular story - a circle of events, which repeats from night into night. The name of the story tells in itself what the whole idea of the narrative is. The story is of a father who constantly wakes up in the middle of the night and failing to wake up his wife who is deep in sleep, goes along the dark corridors of the house into his son's bedroom, switches on the light, hoping to find the boy alive, but then discovers the room is empty, and returns back to his bed in helpless despair. Ithaca, New York:: Kumi Korf,, 2007.. Edition of 9. 6" x 6" x .75" closed. Intaglio prints cut and folded to form an accordion book. Lithograph cover print. Masa waxed paper backing. Cloth covered boards. Housed in matching lidded box. Signed and numbered by the artist Kumi Korf: "'Waves on my Side' is an accordion-pleated book, with intaglio prints on Japanese paper. The pages are images of waves on one side, when unfolded, and of railroad tracks on the other. "The piece is inspired by my childhood memories of riding the train alongside a huge cliff at the edge of the Japan Sea. The crashing waves coming close to the tall bluff felt precarious; as a child, needing to trust that the world around must be safe, I felt a foreboding of tragedy. The sea, the cliff, the locomotive with its black smoke, white steam, and shrieking whistles formed a strong memory.
