A very good artist's book without words beyond the title page and some explanation and history of the work above the colophon, on the recto of the rear cover. In addition to Kaplan's signature and edition number it is additionally inscribed to artist Gerson Leiber: "For Gers from Stan," with an autograph note signed, laid in: "1/19/88 Hi Gers, What a wonderful surprise to get your beautiful 'Declarations". And to give me #49 of 50 is an honor. Thank you -- now that you have the bug -- hope you do more. Enclosed is my 4th book (off-set) -- One of a kind and limited-edition hand printed I will get to one day. Hope to see you soon. Stay well -- Stan." A striking book with an interesting association.

A bright, clean copy in a similarly fresh dust jacket. Price intact on the front flap. A very nice copy of this collection, signed and inscribed by the author on the title page.

[Florence, MA]: Kat Ran Press, 2001. Original Wrappers. Near Fine binding. Folio. [4] pp., 6 plates, [2] pp. Limited edition, number 31 of 50 copies (an additional 15 lettered copies were issued). Signed by Hill on the colophon. As issued in stiff wrappers with title printed on the front wrapper. The plates are printed in black, and numbered in blind at the bottom corner. Hill has embellished by the artist with pencil, and "though these hand embellishments follow similar patterns and themes, each book is different and unique." A beautiful copy of Hill's "imaginary structures." Overpass was intended to be the first title in a series of number books in which an artist would "illustrate numbers in any manner they see fit." A very nice example from a significant American fine press.

In contemporary cloth backed boards with cloth corners; 12 folding hand-colored reproduction Tabula Peutingeriana. Bindings are rubbed at the extremities with fraying corners and spine ends. Light and scattered foxing throughout. Ex-library with early Library of Congress stamps and bookplate; contents generally quite clean and bindings, though rubbed, are solid. The folding facsimiles are remarkably bright a and attractive. Text in Latin. An interesting work by Croatian scholar. Rare in commerce.

Washington, 1832. Disbound. Good binding. Octavo. 12 pp., tables. Removed from a binding. Last two leaves are nearly separated; contemporary ink numeral at the top for the first page; light foxing. Consists of the report of Lieutenant Colonel James Kearney, Corps of Topographical Engineers, and the forwarding letters of Secretary of War John Robb and Lieutenant Colonel J. J. Aberts. An early survey.

As issued, in navy cloth with title in gold on the front cover and the spine. Light shelfwear to the binding including what appears to be a very little paint on the bottom edge of the front board; offsetting to the endpapers, otherwise, it is largely clean. Keith's addresses have quite a range, but a couple relate to the American Civil War, including a sketch of General Eppa Hunton. Haynes 9923.

Covers are separating at the spine and generally soiled and worn; horizontal creased where it was tri-folded; light foxing throughout. "Kelley was an outspoken champion of the freed slaves and of black suffrage. In 1865, arguing in response to a proposed Reconstruction bill, he introduced an amendment that would have extended suffrage to all male citizens, regardless of race, capable of reading the Constitution. Salem, [MA]: T. C. Cushing, 1817. Original Wrappers. Good binding. Octavo. 32 pp. Stitched into self-wrappers. Outer leaves are moderately soiled/stained; interior is fairly bright and clean. A reasonably nice copy. Daniel Webster was one of the defense attorneys in this bizarre case: He had only recently resumed private practice following service in the U.S. Congress. The case involved the "respected" and definitely "connected" Goodridge who accused teh mentally challenged Kenniston brothers of robbery. The cards seemed stacked against the two until Webster rose and began his defense, and stitch by stitch caused Goodridge's story to come apart and succeeded in obtaining the acquittal of the Kennistons. This editions follows a Boston issue of the same year. Shaw & Shoemaker 41955.

In contemporary speckled calf with morocco title label on the spine; the peculiar pagination is consistent with Howes and Streeter, the book is complete. Binding is generally and lightly scuffed with a small gouge to the leather at the fore-edge of the rear board; front board has been discreetly reinforced where it was nearly detached; front free endpaper has a large and early tape repair to the verso; contents are generally foxed throughout. This copy belonged to George Clinton Fairchild Williams with his 20th century engraved bookplate on the front pastedown. Streeter, Howes, and others have noted Kercheval's reliance on Doddrige and others, but for the first part of this work relating "to the settlement and history of the Shenandoah Valley, [Kercheval] was assiduous interviewing the old timers and has assembled a large body of fact and tradition" Streeter 1336. Spine ends softened by largely a clean, bright copy. This copy has been inscribed by by Kessler on the front free endpaper and a manuscript note by Kessler to the recipient is folded and laid in.

San Francisco: Book Club of California | University of California Press, 1938. Vellum Binding. Very Good+ binding. Octavo. xx, [2], 21, [3] pp. Limited edition, one of 350 copies. As issued, in marbled paper over boards, backed in vellum. Spine gilt is a trifle dulled, but generally a very nice copy. Originally composed as a letter to King's friend, the "Bachelor of San Francisco," and first published in Century Magazine in 1886, this delightful tale was inspired by Cervantes and his account of Don Quixote's encounter with the legendary helmet of the Moorish king. Prior to this edition, it only appeared in book for in 1904. This copy with an inscription from historian Carl Wheat, author of Mapping of the Trans-Mississippi West to Joe Blumenthal of the Spiral Press, "a fellow member of WOOFFB." London: Circle Press, 1990. Unbound. Very Good binding. 8" x 6." Numbered 188 of an unlimited edition. As issued, 6 folded cards in heavy paper portfolio, printed in blue. Porfolio is a bit worn, but has kept the contents fresh and nearly fine. A wonderful artist's book composed of six bifolium cards of blind embossed "drawings" depicting a reclining nude progressively turning over.
