Black and white photographs. Kaprow's important book on the then emerging field of performance art. It has the special merit of documenting this movement from within, at the beginning, in real time. He had originally written this work in 1959-1960, revised it in 1961, and revised it yet again for its first publication, here. Alluding to the rapidly shifting art scene, he notes in the Preface that "If I wrote it again it would be a different book.

This edition was published in two volumes: the first being the main text volume illustrated with engravings and the second being a volume of 124 folding plates. The present book is the first volume only. See TOY #2152; MORRIS & HOWLAND p. 76. Bound in royal blue cloth over boards with black endpapers, spine titled in gilt. Rubs to edges of boards, fraying of .25" along head and heel of spine, some evidence of old dampstaining at top 1.5" of lower board. Hinges sound.

Binding sound, hinges not cracked. Faint splitting to rear endpaper along inner margin, though not significant. Prior owner name and inscription dated 1902 on preliminary blank leaf. Near fine overall.. John R. Kenly had just been admitted to the bar in Baltimore when the War with Mexico broke out. He raised a company of volunteers and led them into battle as a captain in the Baltimore-Washington Battalion. This is his excellent first-hand account of these experiences. <br /> <br /> Kenly would later serve in the Union army during the Civil War as a colonel in the 1st Regiment Maryland Volunteer Infantry.

Bound in coarse off-white cloth over boards with dark blue titles and ornaments to spin and upper board, dark blue topstain. scattered faint brown spotting to boards, rear endpaper browned along gutter, front. Jacket has some minor extremity wear, touch of fading to spine, shallow chips at spine ends and fore corner tips, and some slight surface wear. A beautiful copy overall.. Black & white chapter heads, cuts. Rockwell Kent had just finished illustrating his famous edition of Moby Dick for the Lakeside Press when he set out on a voyage to Greenland with a couple of friends. The were shipwrecked, but that didn't stop the adventure. This is that story, superbly written and stunningly illustrated as only Kent could. Printed by William A. Kittredge at the Lakeside Press. Another lovely piece of book design. Uncommon first edition in jacket, damned scarce in this condition.
