Akron, OH: Saalfield Publishing Co, 1902. Octavo ( x cm.), 120, [8] pages. Publisher's advertisements. Second Edition. A second printing of this edition appeared in 1906, with 12 pages of publisher's advertisements. A significant American cocktail recipe book, from the barman of the Holland House Hotel in New York City. In his preface to the Mud Puddle facsimile of this title, "Dr. Cocktail" Ted Haigh describes the author, "Kappeler was a different animal... His guide [...] was the tortoise to the others' hare; slow and steady wins the race... Kappeler, with his old, description-style recipes was the new style bartender. He was the no-nonsense bar master. He was the guy you knew would make your drink right because it wasn't all about him. It was about you." Haigh goes on to state that one of Kappeler's real accomplishments with Modern American Drinks was the large number (he counts seventy-five) of new drinks. Black and orange-decorated brown cloth is soiled. Text block age-toned at edges, but not…

[Battle Creek Mich.]: W.K. Kellogg, 1909. Stapled, tri-fold booklet (21 x 15 cm.). Second issue. A slice or metamorphic book promoting Kellogg's cereal, with six flaps on the central panel allowing the reader to mix and match the circus animals' upper, mid, and lower sections. The rear panel of the booklet, depicting a dancing youngsters and a boy in a wagon drawn by a rooster, advertises Kellogg's Toasted Corn Flakes, and includes a variation on the children's verse, "To market, to market, jiggedy jog... A slightly earlier issue included a back panel depicting the nursery rhyme the "Old Woman in the Shoe". While the booklets state they were "patented Jan. 15, 1907", none appear to have been issued before 1909. Distributed through grocers in exchange for two box tops, it was the first cereal premium produced; soon after, it became available as a mail order premium for two box tops, or 10¢. In one form or another, the Kellogg's Funny Jungleland Moving Pictures book remained in print as a premium…

London: For Richard Wilkin, 1714. Octavo (19 x 12.5 cm.), [16], 218, [13] pages. FIRST EDITION. "Mary Kettilby's collection of cookery recipes and medicinal and home remedies, from a tasty "green-pease soop, without meat" to gooseberry wine. Households that could not afford French cooks or French cooking came to form a growing audience for books by women that contained unpretentious recipes cut to suit a less costly cloth, for pickling and collaring rather than ragouts. Where Hannah Woolley had led, plenty of female cooks with their eye on the profitable middle market followed, with books like Mary Kettilby's collection of recipes (1714) and Eliza Smith's Compleat Housewife (1734)" Colquhoun, Taste: The Story of Britain through its Cookery (2015)). Kettilby's book purported to be a collective effort: the preface stating that 'a Number of very Curious and Delicate House-wives Club'd to furnish out this Collection'. Maclean however (pages 79-82) doubts this, and notes that evidence from later editions…

Description:
London: Printed for Bernard Lintott at the Cross-Keys between the two Temple Gates in Fleet-Street, 1708. Octavo, 160 pages. FIRST AUTHORIZED EDITION. Cagle, cites Foxon, indicating an unauthorized folio edition published in 1707. The book consists of letters to Dr. Lister and others, followed by parallel editions of Horace's Art of Poetry, and King's Art of Cookery. The poem is the author's satire on Lister's translation of Apicius. The author himself became a target for this work. Swift referred to him as a "poor starving wit", and Elizabeth Pennell used Pope's line to describe his verse as written "in a tavern three hours after he could not speak." Near fine in blind and gilt-stamped burgundy cloth. With the bookplate of Pamela Lister, descendant of Dr. Lister, subject of the author's ridicule. [Bitting, page 260; Cagle 794; Maclean, page 84; Oxford, page 51; Pennell, page 142-3].
