Description:
two letters, four pages, one on his law firm stationery, the other in black-bordered personal mourning stationery, in very good, clean and legible condition.
1901-02 Letters by Photo-Secession Photographer Joseph Keiley
Keiley writes: "… the death of my law-partner's youngest child has upset may plans", which made it "next to impossible to get to Club", but "during the coming week I hope to arrange for a glycerine demonstration and will be very glad to have you bring your friend with you …" In the second letter, Keiley thanks Ward for the books she loaned him, and though he had "so little leisure", he could join her for the rehearsal of the Musical Arts Society at Carnegie Hall.
Keiley (1869-194) was a successful New York City lawyer with a passion and talent for artistic photography, who joined his close friend Alfred Stieglitz in founding the Photo-Secession, became Associate Editor of Stieglitz's Camera Notes, journal of the Camera Club of New York, as well as Stieglitz's… Read More

Description:
Folio, two pages inscribed on a four page bi-folium, paper browned, some paper loss on integral address leaf, else in good, legible condition. Letter from John W. Kittera, Federalist member of Congress from Lancaster, Pennsylvania to Jasper Yeates (1745-1817) jurist and justice of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, also from Lancaster, in which Kittera relates some of the growing tensions arising from the Proclamation of Neutrality in 1793 after the declaration of war by France against Great Britain, and the extension of the wars of the French Revolution into a greater maritime war, and the resultant seizure of American shipping by the British as well as the French. " At this most critical and alarming period when the public bodies are in a perfect state of uncertainty whether our common country shall long enjoy the blessings of peace or soon be involved in all the horrors of war, you will excuse me for intruding on you a few sentiments that have strongly impressed my mind. - While the… Read More

Description:
Folio, 44 manuscript pages, bound in later nineteenth century cloth, entries dated 18 November 1849 to 2 June 1850 (although not dated, the entries appear to continue till 15 June 1850); boards worn, damp-stained, some chipping to edges of text, minor spotting to a couple of leaves, one leaf loose, written in ink, in legible hand, written on large full pages.
While the diary is not signed, there is enough internal evidence to attribute authorship. A small piece of paper laid in identifies the keeper of the journal as named "John" and that he has a sister with the initials "J.C.C." Other evidence shows he was a law student at the New York State and National Law School during the course of the journal (1849-1850). The diarist mentions the names of some of his class-mates (Christie, Douglas, Putnam, and others). He also states that his Aunt and Uncle were Abram and Mary Ann Knickerbacker, their daughters Mary and Elizabeth, and his sister Mrs. R. A. Grout. Research online finds a "Catalogue and Circular… Read More
