1721 Japanese Samurai Sword Katana Arami Meizukushi Illustrated New Blades RARE

An interesting Edo and Meiji woodblock-print of 'New Blades.' This collection is the stamping of amateur warriors' blades and polishers throughout the Edo period and is equivalent to the sword of the Meiji era and later called "modern sword.". It follows up on the older collections of blade writings which summarized the accumulated knowledge of amateur warriors' blades and polishers throughout the Muromachi period. After the battle of Sekigahara in Keicho 4 (AD 1599), the Tokugawa shogunate opened and war ended, demand and production methods for swords changed, and later works came to be called "new swords." This 'New Blades' book includes information on large and small swords, knives, tools for forgings, polishing, and repairing, as well as stamps of sword makers and the illustrious line patterns between the edge and spine called the Hamon.

1856 ARCTIC 1st ed Elisha Kane Explorations Voyages Franklin Expedition Maps 2v

The Arctic Exploration, or 'Advance,' led by Elisha Kent Kane, was financed to find Sir John Franklin and his ship which was missing. While Franklin was never found, Kent and his explorers were able to gather a lot of information about people, geography, and natural history of the Arctic region, a relatively unknown region of the world. The discoveries found on this voyage include the Humboldt Glacier, Kennedy Channel, the Kane Basin, and reaching the farthest north of any exploration at the time.

Published just one year before Kent's death, this first edition book was immensely popular and was "often compared to the Bible for wide dissemination of America's bedside reading tables" (Books on Ice 3.9). This book includes engraved plates, maps, and many in-text illustrations of icebergs, ship scenes, animals, and portraits.

1865 1ed Confederate Rebel Prisons TORTURE Andersonville Civil War Life & Death

Robert Kellogg's 'Life and Death in Rebel Prisons' is a rare Civil War account of prisoners of war and conditions of Confederate prisons. According to Nevins,
"A sergeant's journal of captivity, reworked by the editor; very bitter over deliberate cruelty to prisoners, but also gives facts tending to show the opposite."
The contents describe prisoners in Andersonville, Atlanta, Millen and Libby prisons, and other notable prisons, as well as descriptions of prison hospitals in the South.

In addition to the fascinating contents, this work features impressive full-page engravings of Civil War battle scenes and treatment of prisoners, including one disturbing view of prisoners being hanged by their thumbs – strappado torture!

Description:
1658 Imitation of Christ 1ed Thomas a Kempis Elzevier Dutch Rosweyde Classic

"Be not angry that you cannot make others as you wish them to be, since you cannot make yourself as you wish to be."
― Thomas à Kempis, The Imitation of Christ

Thomas à Kempis's most famous and important work has, for centuries, been The Imitation of Christ. This important 17th-century Elzevier printing contains a life of Thomas a Kempis by Heribert Rosweyde, a Dutch hagiographer. This particular 1658 edition, according to Willems, was published in Amsterdam instead of Lyon, based on the signatures and decorative lettering; however, traditionally, Elzevier devotionals sold better in France than the Netherlands so they put a false publisher on this edition. The correct publishing city was later added to the 1674 edition with no other changes made to the edition.
