In the Penal Colony is one of the best-known short stories by Franz Kafka. Indeed, it's widely regarded as Kafka's most acclaimed and widely discussed shorter work after The Metamorphosis. Kafka wrote In the Penal Colony over a period of two weeks in 1914, while he was at work on his novel, The Trial. He revised the story in 1918, as he was dissatisfied with the story's original ending, and it was published in 1919. Equal parts autobiographical, political, and theological in nature, it's a gripping tale that is as compelling and relevant today as when it was written.

Description:
First Edition, First Printing (with 'A' on title page). Fine in a fine dust jacket. Illustrated by Leonard Weisgard. Published posthumously, it is understood that she and her editor held back publishing it hoping to expand it into a larger work. Richly illustrated by Weisgard, the story is lovely in its own right and was Rawlings only true "children's" book. Tight, bright and unmarred. Dust jacket shows very minor edge wear. Lovely brown cloth boards, white ink lettering and pictorial elements, brown paper leaves. Small 8vo. np. Illus. (black and white ink plates). A fine, handsome copy of Rawling's sole children's book!

Description:
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1942. First Edition. Hardcover. Hardcover. First Edition, First Printing, of Rawlings' heartwarming cookbook. With Scibner's 'A,' octavo, original pictorial calico-textured cloth. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket, with only a tiny imperfection on the upper front cover, one below the title, and chip on top of spine. Illustrations by Robert Camp. Readers of Rawlings' 1942 pastoral idyll Cross Creek took special notice of her ability to describe food, and responded to the book with hundreds of letters asking for recipes. Rawlings obliged in Cross Creek Cookery, interweaving her instructions for Florida Backwoods Biscuits and Aunt Luella's Boiled Salad Dressing with nostalgic vignettes and insightful reflections on the many meanings of meals. A wonderful copy of this classic! Used/Near Fine.
