Cold War era proposal for school water fountain designs submitted to the Hungarian Ministry of Culture by Imparmüvészeti Vállalat, a ceramics design firm. Though not a part of the USSR, Hungary was an Eastern Bloc state under deep Soviet influence, its socialist People's Republic government (1949-1989) concurrent with most of the Soviet Union. In keeping with typical Soviet design, the water fountains exhibit a late (and striking) constructivist influence. One photograph depicts a circle of seven fountains, and others designs show circular fountain bowls with multiple spouts; perhaps with the intent of creating a communal water-drinking experience for students. This title sees the TIN TANS venture beyond the kitchen into "Mr. Joseph Brown's strawberry patch" for a game of lawn tennis between an English cup and an American spoon, in addition to getting into a variety of cooking-based mischief. Somewhat Toy Story-esque in its premise ("As soon as you enter the kitche and rooms / [The Tin Tans] dissolve into common saucers and spoons"), this odd collection of humorous poems about humanized kitchen tools is enthralling. The at times chaotic illustrations recall those of STRUWWELPETER, but with the motion and cartoonish exaggeration of early Disney animated shorts. A fascinating work. 11'' x 9.25''. The songs, all originally performed by Woody Guthrie, are here presented as a "little present" to a "Mrs. Braley." In halting English, he notes to Bialey: "please don't be afraid about the cover" (which depicts a hand holding a smoking revolver), and notes that the recordings "sounded better on the tape." His performances, however, are not unaccomplished and are typical for the period, while the cover is a striking word of folk art. Its noirish gloom is surprisingly modern: Mingering Mike meets Raymond Pettibon. Lacquer disc with handwritten labels, about 6.5" in diameter.
