Trotter, a character loosely based on Sherlock Holmes. The plot is typical for Keeler--a deliberately convoluted web of strangely connected people and objects. Keeler was a prolific, though far from successful, writer, but since his death in 1967 he has developed a cult following that now includes science fiction writers Neil Gaiman and Philip José Farmer as well as television writer Ken Keeler. The book is an exposé of the attempt to establish what the author perceived to be a CIA front group on the campus of Southern Illinois University. Protests against the Center in large part led to rioting that resulted in the cancellation of classes and the temporary closing of the SIU campus in may 1970. The book is profusely illustrated with photographs of people involved in the Center for Vietnamese Studies. The book is clean and tight, with some minor smearing of lettering on the front cover. Roanoke, Virginia: Tip "n Twinkle, Inc., 1957. Original surrealist art: an offset lithograph mounted on heavy artist board. The !957 copyright registration was recorded in the Library of Congress' Catalog of Copyright Entries as follows: "Tip "n Twinkle, Inc. Damn, but you make 'em strong. [Atomic cloud bursting from head of grotesque & misshapen face; distorted glass on table] Signed by Kirk. 1Sep57. N6454." The company produced hundreds of humorous matchbook covers as well as larger items, such as a Guide Book to Disney World and an International Order of the Mafia Member In Good Standing Print Board. Both those items turn up on the ephemera market, but I can find evidence that the item offered here has ever been offered for sale. WorldCat locates no copies in libraries.
