New York: Camera Club of New York, 1897. Published in Camera Notes, volume I, number I (July 1897). Printed as a photogravure by the Photochrome Engraving Company, a company that Alfred Stieglitz had founded. Image size is 6 7/8 inches by 4 3/4 inches. Gertrude Kasebier (1853-1934), a leading photographer in the photo-secessionist movement is perhaps best known for her excellent portraits. Alfred Stieglitz recognized her talent when he selected five (!) of her photographs for inclusion in the July 1899 issue of his new magazine Camera Notes. In explaining that decision Stieglitz declared that she was "beyond dispute, the leading artistic portrait photographer of the day." Fred Holland Day (1864-1933) was a major pictorialist photographer who rivaled Stieglitz in influence and reputation early in their careers. He was quite forgotten for some time, but beginning in the 1990s collectors rediscovered him, and his originals are in high demand, in large part because of his homoerotic portraits. Description:
New York: Phoenix Press, 1947. 255 pages. 12mo. Scarce first printing of the second of Keeler's webworkian novels featuring crime analyst Tuttleton T. Trotter, a character loosely based on Sherlock Holmes. The plot is typical for Keeler--a deliberately convoluted web of strangely connected people and objects. Keeler was a prolific, though far from successful, writer, but since his death in 1967 he has developed a cult following that now includes science fiction writers Neil Gaiman and Philip José Farmer as well as television writer Ken Keeler. The book is in very good condition: clean and tight, with minor toning of endpapers; a tiny rusty paperclip mark on pages 240 & 241. The dust jacket is in very good condition: clean and bright, with some minor edgewear and a few very short closed tears and is now protected in mylar.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Carbondale, Illinois: Self Published, 1971. (158) pages. Quite scarce-- WorldCat locates copies in only 12 libraries. The book is an exposé of the attempt to establish what the author perceived to be a CIA front group on the campus of Southern Illinois University. Protests against the Center in large part led to rioting that resulted in the cancellation of classes and the temporary closing of the SIU campus in may 1970. The book is profusely illustrated with photographs of people involved in the Center for Vietnamese Studies. The book is clean and tight, with some minor smearing of lettering on the front cover. There are some tiny cuts in margins of half of the pages--apparently caused by the binding process--they are relatively unobtrusive.. First Edition. Paperback. Very Good +. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. The company produced hundreds of humorous matchbook covers as well as larger items, such as a Guide Book to Disney World and an International Order of the Mafia Member In Good Standing Print Board. Both those items turn up on the ephemera market, but I can find evidence that the item offered here has ever been offered for sale. WorldCat locates no copies in libraries.
