Philadelphia: E.C. Biddle, 1833. Very good. Hand-colored lithograph by Lehman & Duval after Charles Bird King (445 x 338 mm). Head-and-shoulders portrait of female Oto, wife of Chief Shaumonekusse, long black braids with hair parted at center, white and black beaded ear loops, four necklaces, silver bracelet, ruffled blouse or dress top, white and black fur or shawl loosely wrapped around her shoulders, one delicate hand showing. Very mild uniform age-toning (professionally washed). Original lithograph - NOT a reproduction! Hayne Hudjihini or Eagle of Delight (ca. 1804-1822) accompanied her husband to Washington, D.C. in 1821 and so delighted those she met that she was loaded down with presents and King painted several portraits of her. She was thought to be the most beautiful of all the Native American wives who visited Washington. Unfortunately, she died of measles shortly after her return home. A portrait of her hangs in the White House Library. When leaders of various tribes came to visit… Read More

Philadelphia: E.C. Biddle, 1837. Very good. Hand-colored lithograph by Lehman & Duval after Charles Bird King (445 x 338 mm). Full-length standing portrait of male Sioux chief holding a rifle, wearing brightly colored blankets, feathered headdress, necklace of grizzly bear claws, and red leggings decorated with bird feathers. Very mild uniform age-toning (professionally washed, verso of upper left corner with Japanese tissue repair). Original lithograph - NOT a reproduction! Wa-Na-Ta (ca. 1795-1848) was an influential Sioux (Yanktona, on the Minnesota River) leader who fought against the Americans in the War of 1812, even leading a charge on Fort Sandusky, whence his nickname. For his exceptional heroism he was received at the English court and promoted to Captain. After the war, however, he sided with the U.S. In 1825, he signed the Treaties of Fort Pierre and Prairie du Chien, which established peace and territorial boundaries between the Sioux, Chippewas, Sac and Foxes, and Ioways. He was… Read More

When the first three were published in a children's magazine, a year before her death, Kipling explained: 'In the evening there were stories meant to put Effie to sleep, and you were not allowed to alter those by one single little word. They had to be told just so; or Effie would wake up and put back the missing sentence. So at last they came to be like charms,… Read More

Description:
New Castle, DE: Oak Knoll, 2004. Near Fine. 8vo. 198 pp., describing items 446-1369. Original blue printed wrappers. This volume is tantamount to a bibliography of Incunabula Reference works, very well described, and featuring a useful 15-page index. The reference library of the august antiquarian bookselling firm of H.P. Kraus was legendary, and was justly considered to be the largest and most important ever formed by an antiquarian bookseller. HPK was a leading purveyor of incunabula, and it could be argued that the incunabula reference books he used were the definitely the ones worth owning.

Description:
London / Leiden: Warburg Institute / Brill, 1997. First Edition. Very good. Together 7 vols., large 8vo. Original publisher's blue cloth bindings (vols. 1-2 with signs of gentle bibliographical consultation, bound in slightly lighter blue cloth as issued by the publisher; all other volumes preserved in fine condition). NOT ex-library! "Iter Italicum" is a towering achievement of humanistic scholarship, and a monument to the industry and tenacity of its compiler and editor P.O. Kristeller (1905-1999). Over a period of 34 years, Kristeller compiled -- almost single-handedly -- the greatest finding aid of previously uncatalogued (or incompletely catalogued) Renaissance manuscripts ever created. The work comprises 4,645 pages, in which endless manuscripts, located in thousands of libraries all over the world, are described and excerpted. "Iter Italicum" remains an essential reference tool for scholars of classical, Medieval and Renaissance studies. As we learn from Brill's announcement: "The 'Iter… Read More

Dallas: Stamps-Baxter Music & Printing Co, 1939. 198 x 135 mm. [1], 2-48 = 48 pp. Bound in stapled paper wrappers, soiled on front and back covers. Pages slightly yellowed, some foxing and staining throughout, pp. 23-26 loose. An advertisement for a new Stamps-Baxter publication, "Favorite Radio Songs No. 2" on pp. 46-48. With some condition problems, and priced accordingly. A fascinating piece of Dallas radio history, being program notes of an All-Night broadcast of early Southern Gospel Music on KRLD Radio Station (July 1-2, 1939). The pamphlet contains information and photographs of 30 obscure, now forgotten Gospel singing groups from all over the American South, and thus remains a valuable source of information not obtainable elsewhere. According to the introductory article by Harvey A. Armstrong, the purpose of the All-Night Bradcast was "to help promote and encourage nation-wide and better gospel singing." Many famous songwriters and Southern gospel music composers were in attendance that… Read More

Description:
The Hague: Isaac Scheltus, 1785. Very Good. Broadside. Text in two columns. Large woodcut of coat of arms of the Dutch Republic along with the arms of all member states, woodcut initial also with modified Dutch Republic arms. Crease down the vertical and horizontal middle, other small creases in the lower half, ink offsetting from folding on lower half, small tears and chips along edges, small dark stain just above top woodcut. The origins of the Dutch Naval College. Fascinating broadside detailing tax duties on ships trading in the East and West Indies, America, the Cape of Good Hope, and elsewhere, levied for - and applied towards - the newly founded Dutch Royal Naval College ("Kweekschool voor de Zeevaart" or Seminary for Navigation) which produced officers for the Dutch Sea Service. Notably, these officers were not trained at sea but in the classroom -- and in the courtyard where the navy erected large model training ship for the ultimate experiential learning. The vessel was large enough for… Read More
