Based on Chinese medical science, it presented a system of surgical treatment to cure injuries to bone, principally of fractures and dislocations, with instructions on how to stop bleeding and to bind or immobilize the injured part by bandaging. Kagawa (1683-1755), a member of the medical family dynasty, studied in Kyoto with Ryozan Goto and Jinsai Ito, from whom he learned moxibustion and the therapeutic value of the waters of hot springs. Kagawa established the successful Ippondo medical school and was one of the most enthusiastic practitioners of moxibustion of his time. There is another manuscript of this text at Kyoto University, attributed to Kagawa. Some of the illustrations are very different. [Kanto region?]: printed at end, "Ke'en bikuni Chikan, January 1363." An extremely rare dated sutra, printed by the monk Chikan in January 1363, apparently in the Kanto region. It has been printed on fine thick paper (gampi or mulberry fibers), with bold, thick strokes, using black sumi ink. According to the blog of a local printing historian in Yamanashi Prefecture, who is a member of the Hobundo Company (the author does not give his name), the Chikan edition of the Sutra of Perfection of Wisdom was carved in the Kanto region around Tokyo between 1356 and 1410. Chikan was a Buddhist priest with the rank of Biku. Chikan's most important sponsors were members of the ruling Ashikaga clan, including Takauji Ashikaga (1305-58), the first shogun of the Ashikaga shogunate, and his two sons. Fine edition of this selection of lyrics, compiled on the order of the Kangxi emperor (1654-1722), by Shen Chenyuan, Wang Yiqing, and other court officials. The phrase shiyu, "what remains beyond poetry," refers to ci (tz'u) 詞 poetry, or lyrics, "one of the major poetic genres in China." Lyrics were "originally song text[s] set to existing musical tunes." The genre "emerged in the T'ang dynasty in response to the popularity of foreign musical tunes newly imported from Central Asia." Titles of such poems "point to particular tz'u-p'ai 詞牌 (tune patterns) for which the poems are composed" (The Indiana Companion to Traditional Chinese Literature, Vol. 1, 846-49). [Japan]: from final page (in trans.) "copied 1839." The earliest survey of the wealthy Sendai fiefdom - known as the Sendai Kanoko - was prepared in 1695. At that time, the domain was led by Tsunamura Date (1659-1719). The survey was part of a nation-wide effort in the Genroku era to increase the amount of new farmland and improve irrigation works. When Tsunamura finally was able to exercise his own authority (following the famous succession feud Date Sodo), he ordered a series of public-works projects including building windbreaks and improving flood controls and irrigation. First edition and very rare; this work was written as a result of the devastating Great Kyoto Fire, which broke out on 7 March 1788 and lasted several days. It caused serious damage, including the destruction of the Imperial Palace and the Nijo-jo Castle. The fire so shocked the bakufu that senior councillor Sadanobu Matsudaira was sent to Kyoto to investigate and consult with the Imperial Court. The first woodcut depicts how one can prepare for a quick escape in case of fire. This single-page illustration shows how to leave one's street clothes at nighttime so that they can be put on quickly for a fast evacuation. We've also learned that the One Million Years Foundation no longer recognizes this publication as part of the printed oeuvre about the artist. Founded in 1972 by Shizuko Watari (1932-2012), Galerie Watari hosted exhibitions by Kawara, Haring, Broodthaers, Nam June Paik, and Shinro Ohtake. The gallery closed in 1989 and the year after, Watari formed the Watari-um museum in Shibuya. The present exhibition was held concurrently with another one of Kawara's work at the Galerie Watari, One Million Years.
