Description:
Cleveland: World Publishing, 1943. “First Tower Books Edition.” (Tower was an imprint of World Publishing). Inscribed and signed in full by Karloff in 1944; pages yellowed, inevitably, otherwise very good in dust jacket. [With] an exceptional 2 1/2 page holograph letter on “Arsenic and Old Lace” letterhead. Dated May 20, 1943, Karloff writes the publisher, one Dr. Sheare, in New York. A long paragraph concerns the contents of this volume, insisting on the inclusion of some stories, but suggesting the dropping of a Dunsany tale (omitted in the published book). A second paragraph notes that the play is returning to Portland and Seattle (”Of course there is a charming interlude of ten days of one-nighters before we get to Portland which we will negotiate by means of oxcart, bus and wheelbarrow or whatever is handy...”), and that this obligation will delay the completion of his introduction. The original envelope, addressed by Karloff, with his name and address on the verso, as well as a…

Description:
Boston: Little, Brown & Company, 1983. First Edition. One of 32 specially bound and cased copies reserved for the artist; signed by Karsh, and including an original signed print of Pablo Casals). This copy is from the library of Carl Zahn, who was responsible for all aspects of the book’s production and design. Zahn produced the catalogue for Karsh’s first US exhibition, at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston in 1968, and so impressed Karsh that he insisted that Zahn design a number of his future projects. Laid into this copy are two letters to Zahn on Karsh’s letterhead: A single page typed letter, signed, from Karsh’s wife Estrellita, dated March 22, 1974, discusses the “fabulous KARSH Boston Museum Catalogue,” requesting more copies for themselves and the director of a gallery mounting another Karsh exhibition. A two page typed letter, signed, from Jousef Karsh, dated November 6, 1973, discusses his current project and bemoans that Zahn was not its designer. He seeks Zahn’s advice on…

1960. With Karsh’s stamp on the verso; 8 x 10”; in the photographers’s mount (10 x 12”), signed by the subject at the lower right “E.P. Hillary.” The mountaineer is photographed in an anorak, sun-burned and wind-blown, as he must have looked after conquering Everest with Tenzing in 1953, a feat for which the New Zealander was knighted. The photograph is fine; the mat has minor creasing and spotting.
