Description:
N.d., circa 1930s. The watercolor depicts two short men, one with a face that is simian, the other with a massive schnozzle, leaning against a board with canteens. They would seem to be construction workers, but one could say they look like bums as well. The drawing is regardless rather amusing and expertly executed. It forms the front cover of a two leaf oblong card with nothing on the other sheet of card. The two sheets are tied together by a ribbon as well as a pin clasp, and it seems quite possible there never was anything else included. The drawing, fortunately, stands well on its own. The item measures 7.5 by 3.5 inches. There is a small clean corner chip. Very suitable for framing.

Description:
Paris: Marcilly. Printer: Firmin Didot Freres. First Edition thus. Cartonnage romantique. Slipcase of same type. . Very Good. Circa 1830s. Oblong miniature, 41 by 55 mm. 94 pp. Four wood-engraved plates, with touches of amateurish hand-coloring. In our view, these daubs of color are crude, and thus they neither enhance the plates, nor though, we hasten to add, do they detract. Spielmann 290A. Gumuchian 3573. The binding is a pink romantique cartonnage type, with black lined decoration. With a slipcase from another Macilly title, "Le Petit Florian". This slipcase, happily, fits the book's size perfectly, and being also pink, can easily be mistaken as intended for this title. Both the binding and the slipcase have light to moderate wear, with rubbing, etc., but both are still well preserved.

Description:
Paris: Henri Laurens, Librairie Renouard, 1932. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Morin, Henry. 4to. 199 pp. With mix of color and black and white illustrations. 12 nearly full page color illustrations. Color has a light almost pastel like palette, and illustrations by Morin have a winsome fusion of simplicity with pretty detail; or with great economy, he is able to transport us to another time, place and reality. Here are the best known tales of La Fontaine. Some wear to blue decorated cloth, with a few frayed threads along borders and cloth worn through in lower corners. Rubbing along gutter. Color blindstamped animals still bright. Inside pages are toned yet clean. A very good copy.

Description:
1814. Quarter Vellum. Cloth Boards. Near Fine. Spectacular manuscript estate survey maps from early 19th Century. Folio, 53 by 39 cm. 6 text pages, followed by ten double paged maps, all handsomely colored and detailed. The first nine maps are numbered 2 to 10, per table in front, showing that notwithstanding the enumeration, there is not a missing map. One map with extra fold-out flap addenda. An additional double-sided hand-colored map in the back inserted into the foliio, and then two additional hand-colored survey maps by de la Marche or his son, loose -- never bound in -- architectural sketch of the chateau footprint done in pen-and-ink -- two other smaller, less visually exciting maps, and some correspondence. Maps are colored in greens, reds, yellows and blues. The washes of color, together with the obvious precision of the draftsmanship, render these maps, utilitarian in purpose originally, pleasing to the eye and very decorative. Tiny vignettes of churches mark villages, and… Read More

The first novel of the prolific, and long-lived, Lacretelle, first published in 1920. 4to. 24.5 by 19 cm. 252, [1] pp. Beautifully bound in full onlay morocco with a modernist design of four border rectangles, Mondrian-esque, one might say, with spine with Cubist and wavy lines design. Wavy lines repeated in turn-ins. Binder, alas, unidentified. Original wraps are bound in. Marbled endpapers. Marbled paper pastedown on slipcase. Light wear and soiling to binding. Minor loss to paper pastedown of slipcase. Still a gorgeous copy, and we would say other than these cavils, a Fine copy.

Description:
Paris: Didier, 1841. Quarter Calf, over Marbled Boards, with Slipcase to hold four volumes. Very Good. With 62 hand-colored plates, in a work generally encountered without coloring. 12mo. 13 by 9 cm. Gumuchian 3551. Almost identical to the first edition of this work issued three years earlier except for addition in this edition of four wood engraved half titles. In any case, scarce to find an early children's Buffon such as this with the full complement of plates, not to mention with color. The first two volumes have a very light dampstain, nearly inconspicuous. Otherwise, light occasional foxing but generally clean. The contemporary calf spine head of volume 1 has chip and slight chewing. Elsewhere the leather has scuffs and light rubbing, but still attractive. The marbled paper slipcase is solid and attractive.

Vinegia (Venice): Presso Giovachino Brugnolo, 1602. Contemporary full vellum. Very Good. 70 numbered leaves, 140 pp. Small 4to, 7.75 by 6 inches, 19.5 by 15 cm. With 78 woodcuts of philosophers, writers and other figures whose biographies are here rendered as well as a few more allegorical subjects. Also in addition a few printer's devices and/or other woodcut ornaments. This is a translation of Laertius, a third century Greek biographer of philosphers of the Ancient World. The charm of this copy most definitely resides in the illustrations. Vellum boards splayed and with film of soilage. Skiver spine label worn and rubbed. Blank leaves, preliminary and at rear, with chipping and very browned. Some marginal foxing. Generally the text is clean and crisp, as are the illustrations, and the binding remains tight overall.

Description:
Paris: Clarte, 1922. First Edition. Wraps. Very Good. Unsettling Dada-esque cartoons to satiric text, mocking the lead-up to the war, the war itself and its aftermath. 4to. Oblong, 25 by 27 cm. Unpaginated, 51 pp. The imagery is blunt and highly economical; its impact is harrowing and disturbing. The images come across deliberately like pieces of a puzzle, with the text written out as if by a very thick nib to look almost like graffiti. Loforge assiduously avoids the pretty and polished as he is portraying the ugly underside of society throughout. His use of long hand to elucidate the imagery is in keeping with what other surrealists were doing at the time. Here and there letters are deliberately dropped from words as if to elude a censor. Heavy age toning, as per the cheap paper that was used. Otherwise, clean. A monumental work of statement art in book form.

Description:
Quarter Calf. Very Good. A beautiful illuminated manuscript rendering of Lamb's witty and whimsical classic satiric essay, which pokes fun at the extremes engendered by the quest for gastronomic bliss. The illustrations are done in a faux Chinese style, as befitting the subject matter of the essay. N.p., n.d., 20th century. 4to. 30 by 24 cm. Unpaginated, 16 leaves with content on both sides, other than title and final text leaf, followed by five blank leaves. With 12 watercolored illustrations, most half to nearly full paged, with text written with a calligraphic hand. The artist and calligrapher we should think were one and the same but remain anonymous, other than initials given at the end, which given the letter placement, could be FME or FEM. Condition: splitting along rear joint of the leather. Revealed are cords and some of the paper gathering. Boards are splayed. Internally clean and bright, and one might fairly rank as fine.
