Description:
4 volumes, 8v0, later half calf & marbled boards, rebacked with original spines laid on, 3 folding maps & 9 folding tables, xxiv, 591, [1] blank, [16]; [ii], 717,[1], [21]; [ii], 523,[1],[16]; [ii], 610,[8] pp. Edges rubbed, maps with some separation at folds,, edge wear and repaired tears, and occasional light foxing. The Duke de La Rochefoucauld-Liancourt (1747-1827) was known to have some liberal political tendencies, but supported royalty through the French Revolution. Not surprisingly, he fled to England in 1794 shortly after the storming of the Bastille. He would travel to the United States and Canada in 1795, but would return to France four years later. During his travels in North America, he would tour New England, the Eastern Great Lakes, Upper Canada, and even the Southern United Sates. His commentary includes observations on farming, the quality of roads, shipping and whaling in New England, the Quakers, and Philadelphia society. He even makes a comment on how well read American women are.

According to Wagner-Comp, Lang and Taylor were two Quakers who visited tribes recently removed from east of the Mississippi to the west. For the most part, the pamphlet presents their observations about the Cherokees and other tribes that were expelled from Georgia and transported to the Indian Territory. Their report was originally presented at the Yearly Meeting of the Friends of New England and New York before it was published under the present title.

Description:
Pamphlet, 8vo original wrappers 47 pp. Front wrapper has remnant of paper sticker; and title page has library stamp. A few minor chips at the edges. Overall very good or better. Early work on the Western tribes, which takes a look at the impact of U.S. Government relocation policies. Lang and Taylor were Quakers who visited the Winnebago, Kickapoo, Cherokees, Choctaw, and Shawnees between August and December 1842. Not surprisingly, they were quite disturbed about what they found, and this report presents a case for immediate assistance. Interestingly, one of the concerns of the Native Americans was the possibility of yet another relocation. This is a first edition, and while it isn’t totally clear, the Providence issue may have been published before the New York edition, which came out in the same year.

Newspaper, 16" x 22",  six columns of text, 4 pp. Folded at center, several tears and chips at folds and extremities, some loss of text, Lincoln text less affected,  some aging and browning, and some uneven darkening ; in about fair condition overall for a newspaper from this period. Dated April 17, 1865 this is a relatively early account of the Lincoln assassination. Most of the coverage is on the second and third pages of the newspaper.  The articles include stories on the "death bed scene", the attacks on Secretary Seward and his son, the national reaction, and reports on those involved in the plot.  Some interesting coverage of a national event in a local newspaper.

Description:
Newspaper, disbound, 23" x 16", 8 pp. Probably removed, dbd, minor staining and browning, a little creasing and fading; otherwise very good. This is an early report under the heading "Important Assassination of President Lincoln." This is the second morning edition of April 15, 1865 with the 3 a.m. update from Edward Stanton, the Secretary of War, which indicates Lincoln was still alive, but in very bad shape. The article describes John Wilkes Booth, "the actor", as the alleged assassin of the president. It describes how Booth entered Lincoln's box and after shooting him, stating "Sic semper tyranis" before he leaped on to the stage. This report gives considerable detail about the how Washington reacted to the news, and the scene at Lincoln's deathbed. There is also a good deal of coverage of the assassination attempt on Secretary of State, William Seward. This paper represents an important piece of American history.

Description:
8vo, one sheet, printed on both sides. Even toning and aging, small closed tear to the upper margin; otherwise very good. This is a rather scarce government document that informs the military that the "Thirteenth Amendment" has passed, and slavery is officially abolished. Article XIII states "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for a crime, whereby the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction." This document is signed in type by William H. Seward (1801-1872) as the Secretary of State. Congress would follow with a Civil Rights Act of 1866 to give African Americans the same rights as all citizens, but this small printed document presenting the essence of the "Thirteenth Amendment" is an important piece of history.
