Original blue cloth over boards. 306 pages plus publisher's advertisements, "with coloured frontispiece and forty-four full page illustrations from photographs," good condition, original publisher's binding with worn spine, title in gilt, and gold embossed representation of a balloon in flight, on front cover.

The author " . . . was a Swedish engineer, physicist, aeronaut and polar explorer who died while leading an attempt to reach the Geographic North Pole by hydrogen balloon."

The Second Edition, with the Addition of several hundred Sentences.[14] 166 [1], good condition: later speckled calf, corners slightly bumped, red label in gilt on rebacked spine; hinges showing mild wear, but holding; old worming to margins of a few end leaves (not affecting text); bookplate on first fly leaf, inked name of previous owner dated 1893 on front paste down; old inked notes on back fly leaf; overall sound, and in good condition. ESTC R27673

Running headline: "A Poetical Sport." When the book is open, the verso of a previous page (i.e. on the left) contains the Latin expression, the English meaning is on the recto of the opposite page (i.e. on the right). An expression "He knows not a hawk from an handsaw," included on page 37, was used by Shakespeare in his play Hamlet.

A faithful reproduction of the very scarce original 1855 edition, quarto (12 by 9 1/4 inches) Los Angeles: Westernlore Press, 1959. viii, 120 pages, illustrated with 30 unnumbered leaves of engraved plates, nine woodcut illustrations, portraits, 1 folded map, textured black cloth, fabrikoid binding, with title in gilt (within an embossed framed ornament in blind) on front cover, and gilt lettering on spine. Very good condition (minor slight bend to title page, not affecting contents).

Piercy was the artist, and the original author, of this early Western travel narrative.

[i-xvi], i-vi, 1-[80] pages, 30 plates on 16 leaves, double map, index, one of 500 copies, hardcover, dark brown cloth with a quarter bound beige cloth spine, title stamped in gold on the backstrip, top and bottom edges trimmed, fore edges untrimmed.

According to "Thomas E. Williams & The Fine Arts Press" by Richard D. Curtiss, "The advance notice for this book indicates 500 copies printed, whereas a print out by the publisher indicates only 400 copies printed. The former is believed to be the correct number of copies printed."

Very good condition (small, discreet inked name of a previous owner on front fly leaf; covers and spine slightly aged toned, some pages uncut.)

An exploration of the Southwest missions established by Padre Kino, presented in a fine press edition. "In this book it is my purpose to direct the traveler to every location where Kino erected a church."

Original First Edition. xxii, 690 pages, illustrated with [46] pages of plates: 40 illustrations, including portraits, battle scenes, and a facsimile letter to Lee, and 16 maps with color denoting battle lines (red for Confederates, blue for Federals), an appendix with letters of General Robert E. Lee and General Longstreet, and an index. Bound in half red leather, with title and author in gilt between raised bands on spine, matching leather corners, patterned end papers, very good condition (mild shelf wear to edges and corners, not affecting contents).

An important memoir by Lee's second-in-command. Nevins Volume I, page 122: "A combination of reminiscences and rebuttals by a gallant soldier ostracized by his comrades in the Reconstruction period; a necessary source for any study of Lee's army."
