Illustrated after black and white engravings. Purple cloth fading, with some faint soil to rear, very fain soil to front, and a little fraying at head and heel of spine, one tiny spot of darker soil to edge of spine.

Gilt lettered and decorated quarter green buckram over olive rough paper boards lettered in green. 14 tissue guarded tipped in colour plates by Rackham plus colour frontis. Significant edgewear to boards but o/w a very nice clean copy of one of Rackham's stronger efforts.

Full page plates with tissue guards. Rubricated titles and borders. Bound in full light burgundy morocco with 6 compartment and 5 raised bands. Spines faded and unevenly faded boards. Light wear to head and foot of spine, with several spine nicks. Gilt ruled borders, corners a little rubbed, wide inner turn-ins with silk paste-down and front endpapers, all edges gilt. Light sporadic foxing throughout but overall a very clean copy in a tight and square binding. Overall a nice, clean set.

This set boasts 275 naturalistic plate engravings, plus engraved and etched allegorical frontispiece with bust of La Fontaine by Dupuis and Cochin after Jean-Baptiste Oudry, and numerous wood-engraved floral head- and tailpieces by Papillon and Le Sueur after Bachelier. Charles-Nicolas Cochin fils redesigned the original sketches made by Oudry from 1729-1734, etched many plates himself, and directed the work of 42 engravers. One of 1000 numbered copies [#434] bound into green cloth with black lettering to the front board and the spine. Illustrated throughout in black and white. Signed by the author on the title page. Previous owner's inscription to the front endpage.

Volume 1 title-page and index bound at end of part 5, the same occurs for volume 2. Notice from the publisher tipped-in at the beginning of volume 4, with corrected map in volume 3. Light staining to the bottoms of the spines and the edges sunned, heavily at the spine and fore-edges, otherwise a very fresh and clean set. Rare in this condition and in the original wrappers, largely unopened. From the library of Harry G. Lumsfeld, biologist and research scientist with Ontario's Ministry of Natural Resources. In 2004 Harry Lumsfeld became a Member of the Order of Canada for his outstanding contribution to wildlife management and conservation.
