There is also a signed, laid-in note from her mother, Eve Bennett. On a folded sheet that includes a photocopy of a Christmas card design drawn by a young Dilys in 1925. This book was given to the recipient of the note by "Mr. West." (i.e., Herbert Faulkner West, a longtime professor of comparative literature at Dartmouth.) 64 pp. Slender 8vo clothbound hardcover. VG in lightly worn and price-clipped dust jacket. Abrasions on the front pastedown from removal of a bookplate or other item. Unobtrusive and partly hidden by the jacket flap. Prior owner has circled in ink the titles of three poems, (pp., 15, 28 and 45.) Clean internally otherwise. Sound binding. A nice signed copy with a unique association.

An epic poem in blank verse about the persecution of early Christians by "the tyrants of Rome," the spread of Christianity and its influence on the "Manner of Nations." Left unfinished and published the year after John Blair Linn's death at age 27 of tuberculosis. With a biographical sketch of Linn's life and work, including his service as pastor of the First Presbyterian congregation in Philadelphia. Sketch written by Linn's brother-in-law, "C.B.B." Morsum/Sylt : Helmut Schwarz Verlag [1988.] Signed by Boy Lornsen with an original sketch of a sheep. Boldly signed in black ink and dated "Keitum/Sylt / Sept, 3.7.89." A humorous book, in words and pictures, about local sheep. Written in the low German dialect of the northernmost German sea-isle of Sylt, where Lornsen lived in the village of Keitum. An engaging little work by Lornsen (1922-95), prolific German writer and artist who is best known for Robbi, Tobbi und das Fliewatüüt and other works for children. 61 pp., with color photographs throughout the book of sheep and related scenes. Small pictorial hardcover, 6.75 by 4.25 inches. No dust jacket. VG with some rubbing and wear to the extremities. Sound binding. Scarce with Lornsen's signature, and more so with the original drawing.

First published in 1762 and a standard text for decades after. Not stated but written by Robert Lowth, a Bishop of the Church of England and Oxford Professor of Poetry. Commonly known as "Lowth's Grammar," his work contains many of the familiar rules that were impressed upon generations of students from the 18th century onward. (Perhaps its best-known admonition is that a sentence must not end with a preposition.) xv, 221 pages + 1 leaf of publisher ads. 12mo. Early or original calf leather binding. Circa 1920 personal bookplate of Sonia Lustig (1867-1943), a Russian-born American bookplate collector. Lustig lived in Rhode Island, and her notable collection of 5,500+ bookplates is now housed at Brown University in Providence, RI. Lustig's pictorial bookplate features a child riding a mythological Pegasus, with a lush tree and Russian architecture in the background. The motto reads: "In Good and Truth is Our Strength." Signed in the plate with the interlocking monogram "CLD" [New England artist Chester L. Dodge, 1880-1950.] Approx. 2.75 x 3.75 inches. Mounted to a book page from 1922, with the single word "Kimono" printed at the bottom of the verso. Also included is the separate title page from Kimono, a novel by John Paris. Bookplate is VG with typical signs of age.
