In the conflict between Republicanism and the combined isms of the old and new world, which are opposed to it. I yet expect to act an efficient part on the side of the former. That conflict must inevitably end with the destruction and overthrow of one side or the other. The contest to which I refer is one of no ordinary character, and will require no ordinary effort of the Liberal party in America in order to be successful, but that it will in the end be successful I cannot for one moment doubt. "I see Congress has converted the Navy Yard into a Rope Walk. Good – Bye - Pinch. This I have feared ever since Polk came into office, for the most leading democrats of Tennessee have an interest in South Memphis, or at least one or two of those have. How it will affect matters I cannot say, for there is so much uncertainty in the things of this world, I admit my inability to look far ahead. But I trust it will not injure business so far down as we are, taking into consideration… the vast interests above us. Have you paid taxes upon the lots in South Memphis on the Mississippi River? We had better do it, or they will kick up a fuss with us some day… "
Son of a US Congressman and Indian Agent from Tennessee, John Lea was the US District Attorney of Nashville when he wrote this letter, which shows his early influence in assisting the development of what was then the larger city of Memphis, 200 miles to the… Read More

The letters offer a view of one 19th century Massachusetts family and their lives in the state. The Welch's must have been a family of some prominence and privilege, at least for a time. John N Welch ran the customs house in Boston, and two letters show him being relieved of his position, in 1814 and 1829. His sons went to sea and plied the waters of the world with varying degrees of success.
Sample quotes:
"Lynn July 28th 1816 [James Johnson to Lydia H. Welch, Boston]
My dear Sister,
… My ride here was not very pleasant; it was very dusty & we were obliged to keep the windows shut, which produced very disagreeable sensations in your friend.
