Description:
Atglen, PA: Schiffer Military History, 1998. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/Good Plus. First edition. Hardback in dustwrapper. 23.5 × 16cm, 303pp. The Dirlewanger Battalion, also known as "Sonderkommando (special commando) Dirlewanger" was perhaps the least understood, but at the same time the most notorious German SS anti-partisan unit in World War II. German propaganda correspondents and wartime photographers did not follow them in action. And for good reason. Wherever the Dirlewanger unit - named for and led by Oskar Dirlewanger - operated, corruption and rape formed an every-day part of life and indiscriminate slaughter, beatings and looting were rife. Formed as a battalion of convicted poachers in 1940, the unit operated in Poland until 1942, guarding Jews in forced labor camps and making life miserable for Poles in Lublin and Cracow. From there Dirlewanger spent two years combating partisans in central Russia, giving no quarter and expecting none in return, during vicious… Read More

Description:
New Haven & London: Yale University Press, 2015. 1st Edition . Soft cover. Very Good. First paperback edition. 22.5 × 14.5cm, 400pp. For the Makahs, a tribal nation at the most northwestern point of the contiguous United States, a deep relationship with the sea is the locus of personal and group identity. Unlike most other indigenous tribes whose lives are tied to lands, the Makah people have long placed marine space at the center of their culture, finding in their own waters the physical and spiritual resources to support themselves. This book is the first to explore the history and identity of the Makahs from the arrival of maritime fur-traders in the eighteenth century through the intervening centuries and to the present day. Joshua L. Reid discovers that the "People of the Cape" were far more involved in shaping the maritime economy of the Pacific Northwest than has been understood. He examines Makah attitudes toward borders and boundaries, their efforts to exercise control… Read More

Singapore: Graham Brash, 2001. Hardcover. Very Good. Hardback, illustrated boards. Two volumes in one. 22 × 14.5cm, 396pp + 336pp [4]. First published in 1891 in two volumes, this book contains the complete translation of the texts of Taoism - texts of antiquity which, up until the second half of the 20th century, were neglected because of the predominance of Confucianism as the official creed of the Chinese world. The reader will find in these volumes the importance of Taoism - running, as it has done for millennia, through Chinese culture, Fatalism, self-abnegation, the harmony of the universe and, above all, the peculiar stoicism that is not just Chinese but pervades the whole fabric of Eastern culture. Part one contains The Tao Te Ching of Lao Tzu and the Writings of Chuang Tzu, this is continued into part II, with the T'ai Shang Tractate of Actions and their Retributions. London: Collins, 1967. First Edition. . Hardback. Good/Good. First edition, first printing. Hardback in dustwrapper. 21.5 × 14.5cm, 156pp. Rosamond Lehmann's only autobiographical work recreates the events that shaped her life - from childhood to motherhood to the death of her daughter. Rosamond Lehmann was born during a violent February thunderstorm and lived a sheltered, privileged life with her family. Writing from the distance of decades, she reveals why no adult would ever apologize to a child, shares thoughts on her "first conscious memory," and discusses the taboo subjects of "birth, death, physical and sexual functions." Later, she recounts the tragedy that rocked her world as a mother. A blackbird with a broken neck appears as a harbinger of doom: A few hours after finding the bird, Lehmann receives a phone call from her son telling her that her twenty-four-year-old daughter, Sally, is dead. Wracked with grief and desperate for answers, Lehmann, a non-believer,… Read More
