Description:
Cleveland, Ohio: Case Avenue Presbyterian Church, 1920. Hardcover. Fair. Octavo, 200pp., illustrated with advertisements. In fair condition in the publisher's green cloth. Evidently well-used, with old archival paper repairs to the inner hinges, soiling and staining throughout, but entirely legible, and with many pages clean. Several of the blanks at rear have been used (with handwritten recipes). Printed recipes include Fried Parsnips, Potatoes on the Half Shell, Stewed Kidneys, Timbals, and much more. The contributors last names read much more like names from the Mayflower than those of the then-booming population of immigrants from Eastern and Central Europe. A scarce community cookbook for this Cleveland institution; we locate just two copies in OCLC (Harvard and U. of Denver), and none at the usual suspects in Cleveland.

Description:
Mansfield, Ohio: Mansfield Tire and Rubber Co, 1925. Second Edition. Staplebound. Very good. 24mo, 22pp., illustrated. A very good copy in the publisher's stapled mustard-hued wraps. Wraps a tinge dust-soiled, but a nice, clean copy. A curious volume, authored by the Secretary of the Mansfield Tire and Rubber Co. of Mansfield, Ohio. The slim pamphlet gives a short popular history of rubber and tire manufacturing, and discusses the future outlook for the business. It's quite promising, in its tone, as the demand for tires was growing rapidly during this period, considering the growing affordability of automobiles for middle class families. There is an engraved illusration of a Mansfield tire on the last leaf. Though a stated "second edition," we cannot locate any copies of this or any other edition of this text in worldwide libraries, or in commerce. It is not listed in the finding aids for any of the scattered holdings of Mansfield Tire and Rubber Co. materials (i.e. Cleveland…

New York: D. Appleton & Co, 1839. Third Edition. Hardcover. Good. Quarto, 176pp., illustrated with 48 plates (included in the pagination). A good copy only in contemporary 3/4 brown calf and brown ribbed cloth. General rubbing to extremities, foxed and dampstained internally, but complete and structurally sound. New York: Harper and Brothers, 1946. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine/very good. Octavo, 203pp., illustrated. A crisp, clean copy, near fine, with some fading to the top edges. In a very good dust jacket with some rubbing to the extremities and a chip at the crown. This copy with a presentation slip from the author, taped to the front free endpaper, entirely printed, which reads "To Mr. Harry E. Pendry With all goo Wishes Thomas W. Lamont." Though the author's name looks like his autograph, it appears to us to be printed rather than hand-signed, and has been priced accordingly. Still uncommon thus. The tape is contemporary, and has offset both the front endpaper and the presentation slip.

Description:
New York: Harper and Brothers, 1946. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good +/good. Octavo, 203pp., illustrated. A crisp, sound copy, very good or better, with the spine gently cocked and a tiny stain to the top edge. In a good dust jacket with several creases and chips. This copy with a tipped-in typed letter, SIGNED by Lamont, which has been taped to the verso of the frontispiece and the preceding leaf. The letter, dated May 6, 1947, is addressed to one Hilbert F. Day of Cambridge, MA, and discusses in general terms a reading list for children, something Lamont stresses in his memoir as important. Day, as best we can tell from an online genealogy, died that same year. The (presumably slightly later) ownership signature of Gertrude B. Coffin, presumably the painter, is on the front free endpaper, along with a contemporary bookseller label from her hometown of Duxbury, MA.

New York: Harcourt Brace, 1938. Later printing. Hardcover. Good +/good. Octavo, 269pp., illustrated. Presumed later printing, with no statement on the copyright page. A good or better copy in the publisher's balck cloth, slightly shaken, with the spine title worn away, but the contents clean and unmarked. In a good dust jacket, sunned on the spine, with some chips and tears along the extremities. This copy SIGNED and INSCRIBED by Lanchester on the front free endpaper to film critic Ada Hanifin in a contemporary hand: "Seasons Greetings to Ada Hanifin from Elsa Lanchester." Lanchester was an actress and the wife of actor Charles Laughton, and, though she had a long and successful career, probably is best remembered for her starring role in "The Bride of Frankenstein." Uncommon signed, and a nice Hollywood association copy, to boot.

Description:
[Westerham, Kent, UK]: Privately Printed [Westerham Press], 1958. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. 12mo, 31pp., plus back matter. A fine copy in the publisher's thin grey wooden veneer boards with plain white spine. Spine gently and evenly faded, but with the gilt still bright. Else very fresh and handsome. To paraphrase from Lane's Foreword, the illustrations herein were created for various Penguin trade publications over the previous ten years. Since the thin mass-produced paper cannot give the full flavor of these wood engravings, Lane decided to have this little volume made on thicker handmade paper (Hosho-Shi from Berrick Brothers in London), which does more justice to the engravings. With contributions from Reynolds Stone, Cecil Keeling, Derrick Harris, Imre Reiner, Roy Morgan, George Buday, David Gentleman and Diana Bloomfield. A lovely little book. Laid-in is a Christmas card from H. F. Paroissien, who seems to have been a Director at Penguin at the time of publication.

Description:
(Los Angeles]: (Dick Lane), 1952. Staplebound. Very good=. Small octavo, 31pp. About very good in the publisher's printed stapled wraps. Some creasing and minor chips to extremities, and ink notations on the front wrap and the last two leaves, but otherwise a clean, sound example. Very scarce and ephemeral pamphlet which offers photographic portraits and biographies of 34 wrestlers (including a few pairs of brothers), all of whom were competing and performing in Southern California under Dick Lane's promotion in the early 1950s. Some of these wrestlers were or would become household names, including Gorgeous George, Argentina Rocca, Woody Strode (also an NFL player and actor), and several others. A number of the portraits are striking and intimidating, fitting for a book designed to promote this hard-hitting, merciless occupation. We can locate just one copy in OCLC (Notre Dame), and found none in commerce as of this listing. A great piece of California midcentury wrestling history.

Englewood Cliffs, NJ: Prentice-Hall, 1977. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good/very good. Octavo, 314pp., illustrated. A very good copy in the publisher's reddish-brown boards with mild edgewear, and foxing to the edges. Internally clean. In a very good dust jacket with some rubbing and short tears, gently sunned on the spine. SIGNED and INSCRIBED by co-author Dick Gregory on the front free endpaper "To Jim." Illegible owner's name on the front paste-down. An interesting copy, which also contains a lengthy inscription on the half-title page from Robert Byron Watson to Dolores French, quoting a verse from Ivan Andreyevich Krylov. Watson was a purported witness to a conversation between two art gallery owners in Atlanta (Harold Eugene Purcell and Jerry Adams), and some of their associates, about a plot to assassinate Martin Luther King, Jr. The conversation took place exactly one week before King's murder in Memphis. The FBI later determined that Watson's story was not credible, though it's worth…
