Description:
London and New York: Longmans, Green and Co, 1892. Limited first edition. Ford, H.J.. A handsome copy of the third of Lang's beautiful fairy books with illustrations by Henry J. Ford. The Scots author was an avid collector of fairy tales from around the world and many of the stories in this collection, particularly the classic French tales, are translated here into English for the first time. In the preface Lang writes, "The stories in all the books are borrowed from many countries; some are French, some German, some Russian, some Italian, some Scotish, some English, one Chinese. However much these nations differ about trifles, they all agree in liking fairy tales." One of the French stories collected in 'The Green Fairy Book' may have provided inspiration for J.R.R. Tolkien's 'The Hobbit' and 'Lord of the Rings'. Issued in the year of Tolkien's birth, we know that Tolkien had read the 'The Enchanted Ring' in Lang's 'Green Fairy Book'. Tolkien makes reference to the collection in his dissertation,… Read More

Description:
London: Augener Ltd in Association with Adam and Charles Black, 1911. H. Willebeek le Mair [Henriette]. Henriette Willebeek le Mair (1889-1966) was a precocious child artist, her first book being published at the tender age of fifteen. She was actively encouraged by her parents and received instruction from the noted Parisian illustrator, Maurice Boutet de Monvel. Le Mair illustrated a total of fourteen books in her distinctive style characterised by gentle forms and subdued and sophisticated colouring. Before her conversion of Sufi Islam, Le Mair ran an nursery in her home and used the children as models for her art. The present edition is a very beautiful book: Adam and Charles Black were renowned for the quality and finesse of their colour plate reproduction. 'Our Old Nursery Rhymes' is one such book as the colour production is neither bold nor washed out and the publishers have faithfully reproduced the gentle tones the author intended for her beautiful plates. Oblong quarto, gilt lettering and… Read More

Description:
Paris: Tolmer, 1924. First Edition. An outstanding French children's book of the 1920s and an unusually bold and daring example of pochoir design. Edy Legrand (1892-1970) was a leading illustrator of the Art Deco era, renowned for challenging traditional notions of children's book design. This folio, celebrating the great French explorers of the Pacific and Americas, was printed using the pochoir method of multiple colour stencilling guards. The resulting images are remarkable for their strong lines and vivid colouration. A prolific artist, Legrand illustrated a wide range of material including Don Quixote, The Three Musketeers and Dante's Inferno. Nonetheless, his children's books - remarkable for their blend of naïveté and confident design - are considered his most enduring productions. Legrand later worked in the United States, and eventually settled in Morocco where he produced oil paintings now considered modern masterpieces. Plates from Voyages et Glorieuses Decouvertes... were included in… Read More

A contemporary of Le Corbusier, Letrosne is also known for the remarkable concrete architecture of the zoo at Vincennes. Description:
London: International Times (IT), 1968. Andre Bertram. This issue is most notable for its cover: as the editor explains, 'Our front page is a found object. We found it flyposted to the building that houses our offices...' In fact, the cover is actually a translation of an original Situationist poster produced in October 1967 to announce the publication of "Internationale Situationniste" #11. This cover is probably the single most iconic English-language Situationist artifact. Words by Raoul Vaneigem, graphics by Andre Bertram. Other contents include: Allen Ginsberg, "The Maharishi and Me"; "Three Views on the Anti-University" by Harold Norse, Alexander Trocchi and Robert Tasher; "Family Dog" and "Middle Earth" advertisements; J.G. Ballard's poem "Why I Want to F..k Ronald Reagan"; international reports from Sweden, Manila, New York and Germany; centrespread "IT Supports Dick Gregory for President of the United States"; a page of letters about censorship from Tom Maschler, John Calder, Marion Boyars… Read More

Description:
Nottingham: Courtaulds Ltd, 1925. First Edition. Enchanting catalogue of 1920's women's fashion and textiles for home furnishings and interiors. "Beautiful frocks, like pictures, need an appropriate frame to set off their loveliness, and Courtaulds, whose marvellous development of Artificial Silk has resulted in the existence of the beautiful materials I hve endeavoured to describe to you in this little book, have also brought their years of experience in the manufacture and perfecting of this achievement, to bear upon the heavier forms of fabric necessary for furnishing processes. Surely, Alladin, when first his gaze alighted on those glistening treasures within the magic cave, felt much as I did when I viewed the modern storehouse of wonder, where are so artistically displayed, Courtauld's fabrics for the home. The room was ablaze with colour, rich Brocade and slim Taffeta Hangings, Damask and Tapestry - and what seemed, if possible, more exquisite than all the others, a reproduction of red… Read More

Offering a varied and at times controversial collection of Australian and European literary talent, "The London Aphrodite" is a testament to the energy of the Lindsay family as artists, writers and publishers. The journal was banned in the United States for alleged obscenity. From the editiorial manifesto: 'We affirm Life, and for definition quote Nietzsche: Spirit is that life which itself cuts into life. We affirm Beauty, and by that term understand a sensual harmony, a homogenous ecstasy, which, constructing intellectually, yet hates nothing so much as the dry cogs of the objectified and objectifying intellect.'. Sydney: Art in Australia, 1920. A beautiful copy of Lindsay's famous work covering the meaning of life and art, drawing on philosophical concepts. Signed on front endpaper by Lindsay with a full page original etching tipped in "All who would examine the problem of Life must first remove from it the problem of Existence. It is the confusion between these two things that has confused all human morality. By Existence one comprehends the body, and all that serves to supply its needs, to keep its machinery active. By Life one understands all that goes beyond the body, the impulse that we vaguely call the mind, the soul, the intellectual process. The body is the poor relation of the mind, the servant, the vehicle. In serving its needs, one supplies movement; in servings its senses, one supplies material for the intellectual process. Between these functions, high and low, one must seek a direction for Man's destiny. To find that direction is to find the High Morality. In short, to find the direction of… Read More
