London and New York: Longmans, Green and Co, 1892. Limited first edition. Ford, H.J.. A handsome copy of the third of Lang's beautiful fairy books with illustrations by Henry J. Ford. The Scots author was an avid collector of fairy tales from around the world and many of the stories in this collection, particularly the classic French tales, are translated here into English for the first time. In the preface Lang writes, "The stories in all the books are borrowed from many countries; some are French, some German, some Russian, some Italian, some Scotish, some English, one Chinese. However much these nations differ about trifles, they all agree in liking fairy tales." One of the French stories collected in 'The Green Fairy Book' may have provided inspiration for J.R.R. A lovely example of the skilful printing and generous book design that characterise the works of the publishers T.C. & E.C. Jack. With six illustration plates in photogravure from paintings by Tom Scott, RSA. Small quarto, six photogravure plates including the frontispiece (printed tissue-guards extant), with generous margins, edges uncut at fore and base, bound in the original green cloth; scattered modest foxing, a very good copy.

Paris: Le Divan, 1922. Signed Limited Edition. Near fine. Marines par Guy Lavaud avec 15 dessins de André Lhote A splendid children's album celebrating the joys of maritime adventure. This is one of only 25 examples with aquarelle handcoluring by the artist; numbered and fully signed by Lavaud and Lhote. Quarto, 12 leaves, hand-coloured illustrations, excellent and unopened, wrappers a little worn but internally excellent.

London: Augener Ltd in Association with Adam and Charles Black, 1911. H. Willebeek le Mair [Henriette]. Henriette Willebeek le Mair (1889-1966) was a precocious child artist, her first book being published at the tender age of fifteen. She was actively encouraged by her parents and received instruction from the noted Parisian illustrator, Maurice Boutet de Monvel. Le Mair illustrated a total of fourteen books in her distinctive style characterised by gentle forms and subdued and sophisticated colouring. Before her conversion of Sufi Islam, Le Mair ran an nursery in her home and used the children as models for her art. The present edition is a very beautiful book: Adam and Charles Black were renowned for the quality and finesse of their colour plate reproduction. Paris: Tolmer, 1924. First Edition. An outstanding French children's book of the 1920s and an unusually bold and daring example of pochoir design. Edy Legrand (1892-1970) was a leading illustrator of the Art Deco era, renowned for challenging traditional notions of children's book design. This folio, celebrating the great French explorers of the Pacific and Americas, was printed using the pochoir method of multiple colour stencilling guards. The resulting images are remarkable for their strong lines and vivid colouration. A prolific artist, Legrand illustrated a wide range of material including Don Quixote, The Three Musketeers and Dante's Inferno. Nonetheless, his children's books - remarkable for their blend of naïveté and confident design - are considered his most enduring productions. By the influential French architect, Charles Letrosne (1868 -1939), chief architect of Civil Buildings and National Palaces, first chief architect of the Paris World Exhibition of 1937, and officer of the Légion d'Honneur. A contemporary of Le Corbusier, Letrosne is also known for the remarkable concrete architecture of the zoo at Vincennes. Letrosne's Murs et Toits pour les Pays de Chez-Nous ‘served as a catalyst for the restoration of damaged communes all over France: including even those villages that had been left uninhabited by peacetime rural exodus!'
