Description:
This is 7 of the 12-book set of The Works of Charles Lamb, published in 1903 by Dent London and then co-published by Dutton New York. This collection was a best-seller and was printed four times. Four of these books are first editions from 1903; three are 1914 reprints. The set was printed in the UK and is of the best quality, but it was printed for mass-marketing in the UK and US, and likely presented so as to be affordable.
The books are the complete collected works of the great English writer Charles Lamb (1775-1834), who remains most famous for his Essays of Elia (Elia was his pen name). His essays were wildly popular and influential; he also wrote fiction, children's stories, poetry and criticism and, with his sister Mary, is credited with expanding the public's knowledge of the works of Shakespeare.
This set is in superb condition. All are heavily illustrated, in black and white.
Each book is 4 3/4" x 7 5/8". Beige boards with navy blue spines. Brilliant gold design on the front and spine.

Description:
Essays of Eliais a collection of essays written by Charles Lamb (1775-1834), the English essayist, poet, and antiquarian, best known for his Essays of Elia and for the children's book Tales from Shakespeare, co-authored with his sister, Mary.
Essays of Elia was first published in 1823, then a second volume came out in 1833. The personal and conversational tone of the essays charmed readers; the essays established Lamb as "the most delightful of English essayists".
This particular copy, published by Thomas Nelson & Sons in 1914, is 4 1/3" x 61/3", 378 pages. Red Boards with a design impressed on the cover and bright gold lettering on the spine. The book itself is in fine shape, although the paper has darkened a little. But the original owner tried to re-glue the spine and the glue has stained two pages of the table of contents. He needn't have bothered; except at the front, the spine is fine. The back cover has a little bit of scuffing and fading. The original owner has written lots of notes in it, in… Read More

Description:
This is a pristine first edition of the book club edition of Rachel, Rachel, published by Knopf in 1968. The book was the award-winning third novel by renowned Canadian author Margaret Laurence, and was originally published in 1966. It is about the sexual awakening of a 30-something New England schoolteacher. Its original title was A Jest of God. However, in 1968, the book was made into a film by Paul Newman, and he gave the film the title Rachel, Rachel. The film was produced and directed by Newman, with Joanne Woodward as Rachel. She won the Golden Globe for Best Actress for the role, and it received a slew of Oscar nominations. After that success, Knopf re-released the novel under the name Rachel, Rachel. The dust jacket is unclipped and has the shelfwear you see in the photos. There is a tiny remnant of the price tag on the front endpaper, but the book has not been read.NOTE: My quoted price for shipping OUTSIDE of North America is for surface mail without tracking. Leacock wrote 22 works of non-fiction, 2 biographies and 29 novels; Model Memoirs is his 23rd. It was published in 1938 by Dodd Mead. As was the case with all of his books, additional printings had to be done regularly—this is a copy from the 4th printing, in 1940.

This is a rare copy of Charles Lever's Martins of Cro'Martin, by the Anglo-Irish author Charles Lever (1806-1872). Lever, who wrote about 30 novels, is now known as one of the most under-rated writers of the 19th century, and well on a par with Thackeray, Trollope and Dickens (Trollope was one of his biggest fans). The story, which begins in 1829, is about an Anglo-Irish family dealing with the profound social and political upheaval taking place in Ireland at the time. Martins of Cro'Martin was originally published in 1856 and usually appeared in 2 volumes, with illustrations/etchings by Phiz (the Dickens illustrator Hablot Brown).
This copy has no illustrations and is 680 pages. It was published in New York by Hurst & Company, as part of its Eminent Authors series, which was released in 1902.

Description:
This is a near-perfect first edition of Slim: The Standardbearer, a brilliant biography written by Ronald Lewin. It documents the life of William, Field Marshal Viscount Slim, in the two World Wars, and the inter-war years he spent in India and Burma as leader of the 14th Army, where he was known as Uncle Bill to his devoted soldiers.
Slim (1891-1970) was blessed with none of the advantages of wealth and social position that eased the progress of many army officers. With no armoury apart from his integrity, his personality and his intellect, he rose to the pinnacle of his profession as one of the finest fighting Generals of World War II on either side.
This book is 349 pages, with loads of maps, illustrations and photos.
It has one dogear and the paper has darkened a little.

Description:
The Prodigal Parents (1938) is about the revolt of the parents against the revolt of youth as exemplified by a typical middle-class family of four. Fred Cornplow, shrewd middle-class, middle-aged realist, gradually wakes to find that his two children think of him as intellectually obsolete, as a convenience, and as a walking bank account to whom they need return neither affection nor thoughtfulness. With his genius for dramatizing thoughts that are on the threshold of every mind, Lewis writes with affectionate sympathy of the problems of the successful man, his children, and his wife.
This is a first edition, published by Doubleday Doran in 1938. It is red boards, with an impressed design on the cover and black type on the spine. The spine has fading but no other major wear. The inside front cover has an impressive-looking signature on it, in purple ink. Other than that, it's in perfect condition, although the covers could use a once-over with some Absorene.

Description:
This is a first edition of Kingsblood Royal, by the American author Sinclair Lewis (1885-1951). Lewis was the first American author to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature and the first to decline a Pulitzer Prize (for Arrowsmith—he declined because he did not agree with contests where one book or author was praised over another). His works are known for their critical views of American capitalism and materialism, and for his strong characterizations of modern working women.
Neil Kingsblood is a white middle-class man who discovers that he is directly descended from an African. He tells his friends about his ancestry, the news spreads and people behave differently toward him. He loses his banking job and is run out of his whites-only community. He is forced tochoose between continuing what he has come to see as a hollow existence in the white community and taking on the oppressed minority status of the black community. This novel is known as being 'wickedly funny'.
