Description:
(Paris.). (circa1800).. Engraving on watermarked laid paper, 30 x 44.5 cm (plate-mark), sheet trimmed almost to the platemark, margins spotted, but a very good dark impression. Idyllically composed view of the Admiralty Islands, (now often referred to as Manus after the largest island), Papua New Guinea, prepared for the Atlas to Labillardiere's account of the "Voyage a la recherche de la Perouse". The beleaguered voyage searched in vain for La Perouse and the expedition's leader Rear-Admiral Bruny d'Entrecasteaux died of scurvy. However, the voyage numbered gifted scientists and naturalists (Labillardiere), as well as Charles-François Beautemps-Beaupré, now regarded as the father of modern French hydrography. As Ferguson notes, "The expedition made several important contributions to geographical knowledge, and the investigations of the naturalists into productions of countries visited were of special value". .

(Paris.). (circa1800).. Engraving on watermarked laid paper, 45 x 30 cm edges spotted, four spots affecting the background of the image, but a very good dark impression. Beautifully composed image of a man of the Admiralty Islands, (now often referred to as Manus after the largest island), Papua New Guinea, prepared for the Atlas to Labillardiere's account of the "Voyage a la recherche de la Perouse". The man holds a lime bottle and a paddle and has a fish tooth bound to his left arm. A shell hides his penis. He is tattooed and has earrings and a nose ring. The beleaguered voyage searched in vain for La Perouse and the expedition's leader Rear-Admiral Bruny d'Entrecasteaux died of scurvy. London.: The University of Chicago Press.. 1994.. Volume II only. Black and white illustrations, xxiii + 392pp, appendices, bibliography, index, sunned spine and light shelf wear, very good paperback copy. "Praised for its scope and depth, 'Asia in the Making of Europe' is the first comprehensive study of Asian influences on Western culture. For volumes I and II, the author has sifted through virtually every European reference to Asia published in the sixteenth-century; he surveys a vast array of writings describing Asian life and society, the images of Asia that emerge from those writings, and, in turn, the reflections of those images in European literature and art." Description:
Eugene.: Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art.. 2007.. Colour illustrations, 56pp, paperback. Quarto. "Although it remains under-appreciated in the West, calligraphy in Korea and throughout East Asia has traditionally been viewed as the highest of the visual arts, more valued than painting or sculpture. Contemporary Korean calligrapher Jung Do-jun's bold and handsome art displays a great diversity of style and format. Jong's work incorporates many styles of calligraphy, featuring both Korean hangul script and Chinese characters. In addition to his mastery of traditional calligraphic styles, Jong also creates expressive, modernistic works whose vibrancy helps keep calligraphy relevant as a modern art form. A Way with Words introduces a broad range of readers to Jung Do-jun's compelling work, covering the art of calligraphy generally and placing Jung's work in the context of the East Asian calligraphic tradition." .

Description:
United Kingdom.: Palgrave Macmillan.. 2011.. Black and white photographic illustrations, xii + 192pp, appendices, notes, bibliography, index, hardback, very good. Thriving on its long-term collective memory of possessing futurity, the mega city of Shanghai on the Eastern seaboard of China is once more jockeying for the position as Asia's foremost modern place. An essential part of the regeneration of contemporary Shanghai has been the return, not only of foreign direct investment, but of 'Westerners' to the city since the 1990s. Contributing to current debates about the globality and mediatization of memories, Lagerkvist critically interrogates Shanghai's spectacular resurrection into an emergent world center from the vantage point of how Western elites (tourists, expatriates and travel bloggers) partake in the production of New Shanghai. Through performances of memory, Westerners consume the regenerative nostalgia of the city. This book shows that these mediatized memory practices become essential…
