Description:
3 p.l., 155 pp. 8vo (171 x 102 mm.), cont. mottled calf (joints a little rubbed and cracked at head & tail, but strong), spine gilt, red morocco lettering-piece on spine. The Hague: J. Neaulme, 1747. First edition of this groundbreaking work on the arts in France, composed by the "father of modern art criticism" (Oxford Art online, by A. McClellan). La Font (1688-1771) was employed at Versailles as Gentilhomme de la Reine to Marie Leczinska, and befriended the painter F. Lemoyne. He anonymously wrote several other well-regarded books on the arts. The present work, in addition to his Sentimens (1754), another Salon review, "fuelled an explosion in Salon criticism, much of it anonymous, in the second half of the 18th century and marked a turning-point not just in the history of art criticism but in the relationship between art and politics as well."-Oxford Art online. Description:
Finely engraved frontis. port. of the author & eight folding engraved plates. Five vols. 8vo, fine cont. mottled calf (a few minor defects), flat spines gilt, red morocco lettering pieces on spines. Paris: Maradan, 1797. Second edition, corrected, and enlarged. This edition expands the sections on mineralogy and petrology from two volumes to four. First published in 1795, this is the author's chief work, which enjoyed considerable popularity among his contemporaries; it was founded for the most part on Werner's teachings. "Taking a broad cosmogonical view of creation, Lamétherie regarded the major features of the earth as the result of the combined action of crystallization, moving water, and shifts in the planetary-motion characteristics of the earth."-D.S.B., VII, p. 604. La Métherie (1743-1817), was chief editor of the famous Journal de Physique from 1785 until the year of his death. He wrote a number of important works on mineralogy and was a friend to… Read More

3 p.l., 474, [2] pp. 8vo, cont. sheep-backed boards (several small wormholes in margins of final few leaves), spine ruled in gilt, brown morocco lettering piece on spine. Paris: Rue et Hotel Serpente, 1785. First edition. La Métherie (1743-1817), an inveterate opponent of Lavoisier's theories, was chief editor of the famous Journal de Physique from 1785 until the year of his death. He wrote a number of important works on mineralogy and was a friend to many of the leading scientists of his time, especially Cuvier. In this work, La Métherie stated that "all combustibles (including perhaps diamond) contain inflammable air, which he identified with phlogiston and thought it is contained in metals...He called oxygen 'pure air' and nitrogen (phlogisticated air) 'impure air'. Pure air consists of vesicles inflated by the principle of heat. Nitrous air (nitrous oxide) is a compound of nitric acid and inflammable air or phlogiston. Fixed air, which he called… Read More

Description:
Two engraved plates (one is folding & with eight images) & five folding woodcut plates of watermarks. Five vols. bound in four. 8vo, cont. paste-paper boards (occasional minor browning), flat spines gilt, red leather lettering pieces on spines. Brussels: [Privately Printed], 1803. The very rare privately printed catalogue, in its most complex state, of the vast and famous library of Carlos Antonio La Serna (1752-1813), bibliographer, historian of early printing, and "conservateur" at the Brussels Library. The main part of the library, the finest of the time in the Low Countries, was actually amassed by his uncle, Don Simon de Santander San Juan, former secretary of the Spanish King and an ardent book collector resident in Brussels. The collection passed to his nephew Carlos Antonio upon his death in 1791. Carlos Antonio, who had come from Spain about 1772, aided his uncle in forming the collection. Upon inheriting the collection, Carlos Antonio was forced due to family… Read More

Description:
Title within finely engraved & elaborate architectural border and 27 engraved plates (four double-page or folding). Collation as in Mortimer: "four preliminary leaves, one additional leaf of printed text (leaf [32]), & 27 engraved plates on leaves 5-31, 33-36." Large folio, cont. speckled calf (joints a little cracked but strong), double gilt fillet round sides, spine gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine. From the second leaf: "Roma, In Casa Nostra," 1559. Fifth edition (1st ed.: 1552) of this important work in the study of classical architecture and one of the earliest architectural treatises illustrated with copper plates, in place of woodcuts and printed text. The author found the medium of copper engraving far superior to the traditional woodcut image, allowing for greater precision and realism. Labacco (1495-1567?), Italian architect and frequent collaborator with Antonio da Sangallo the Younger on projects such as St. Peter's Basilica, privately published this work with the help of his… Read More

Description:
One engraved plate & one woodcut head-piece vignette. 40 pp. 8vo, attractive modern marbled boards, red morocco lettering piece on spine. Paris: Gibert, 1773. First edition of this famous book which caused a panic in Paris before it was published. Lalande "caused another stir in 1773, when he discussed the possibility of a collision between the earth and a comet. His work on the perturbation of comets by the planets indicated that the orbit of a comet might be altered enough to make a collision with the earth possible. He realized that the likelihood of such a collision was extremely slight, but he failed to emphasize this point in summarizing his paper before the Academy. The result was a panic in Paris based on the rumor that Lalande had predicted the imminent destruction of the earth. Even prompt publication of the entire paper [this book] did not completely reassure the public."-D.S.B., VII, p. 581. Fine copy. ❧ Lalande, pp. 536-37. Yeomans, Comets, pp. 166-67.

One engraved plate & one folding printed table. xvi, 375 pp.; 2 p.l., 412 pp. Two vols. 8vo, cont. cat's paw calf (light foxing & minor stains). Paris: Maradan, Seconde Année de la République [1794]. First edition. Lamarck (1744-1829), the noted biologist and evolutionist, had pronounced chemical theories and they were an important part of his ideas about nature and evolution. He was an adversary of Lavoisier's anti-phlogistic theory and proposed the four-element theory (earth, air, water, and fire). Lamarck believed that these four elements "have no attraction for one another but tend to separate unless constrained by force...He proposed a new 'pyrotic theory'."-Partington, III, p. 490. Lamarck attempted to account for a great number of chemical and physical phenomena such as sound, electricity, magnetism, color, and vaporization with his system. "In this work Lamarck sets forth his views on the immutability of species and attacks the theory of the spontaneous origin of life. The book is… Read More

Description:
30 folding leaves. 8vo (273 x 200 mm.), orig. wrappers (wrappers frayed & a little soiled), stitched as issued. [Japan]: late Edo. Stone lanterns, which originated in China, were first used in Japan to illuminate pathways in Buddhist temples. In late 16th-century Japan, tea ceremonies were often held at night, necessitating the illumination of the stone paths. Accordingly, tea masters such as Takeno Joo, Sen no Rikyu, and Furuta Oribe introduced stone lanterns to the design of tea gardens. Our manuscript contains 60 fine drawings of stone lanterns of various styles, ranging from highly ornate to very simple examples. Many of them were favored or designed by the great tea masters of the late 16th century and include ancient lanterns formerly used at shrines and temples. Each of the 60 lanterns has descriptive notes with details of the measurements of all the parts of the lantern (these include the jirin, hibukuro, kasa, and tama sections), locations in famous tea gardens or temples, and motifs… Read More
