London, c. 1890. 15 hand coloured paintings on glass in lantern slide format. , 15 glass slides in wooden frames. Housed in a wooden box with sliding top, of late decorated with Greenaway figures in coloured format. A set in excellent condition. AN ESPECIALLY APPEALING SET OF BRIGHT HAND-PAINTED MAGIC LANTERN SLIDES. The images are cute and charming illustrations of animals, birds, or clowns. Three such images appear on each of the wooden-framed glass slides. These lantern slides, typically presented on a painted wall by an early type of image projector, helped to bring hours of entertainment into the home prior to the invention of computers or television. Lanterna Magicain were in wide use from the 18th century until the mid-20th century when it was superseded by a compact version that could hold many 35mm photographic slides: the modern slide projector. The images are vivid and extremely decorative. Black paint was used as a background to block superfluous light, so the figures… Read More

First Revised Edition With a map and sixteen illustrations on full-page plates. 8vo, publisher's original red cloth, lettered in silver on the spine panel, in the pictorially illustrated dustjacket. [xvi], 15-256 pp. A handsome and well preserved copy, the dustjacket complete with light edgewear, some evidence of old damp to the bottom of the rear portion of the jacket, some offsetting to the cloth adjacent to that portion of the jacket. A FINE BIOGRAPHY OF T.E.L. BY A WELL REGARDED AND PROLIFIC AUTHOR. As Payne writes, "...what was most remarkable about Lawrence was a peculiar sweetness, a gentleness, and a generosity which seem to derive from an earlier age than ours. He had an essential asceticism, a contempt for all the flesh that was not hard muscle. In war he could be ruthless; in solitude, more ruthless still; but the image he left on the world was a man with a dancing gaiety, amused by all men's follies, but chiefly by his own, with an impish delight in… Read More

Illustrated with 12 photographs on 10 glossy plates and with three maps. 8vo, original black cloth lettered on the spine in gilt. 448 pp. A fine copy, with neat published comments and portrait of Lawrence pasted to the end papers. WELL WRITTEN ACCOUNT BY ALDINGTON. He called the work a 'Biographical Enquiry' as he went back to research on his own the claims made in the many, many earlier biographies of his subject, including Lawrence's own writings such as THE SEVEN PILLARS OF WISDOM. Aldington's "Enquiry" caused a scandal on its publication, and an immediate backlash. He was the first to bring public notice to Lawrence's illegitimacy and he asserted that Lawrence was homosexual. To even greater outrage people felt Aldington attacked the popular hero as a liar, a charlatan and an "impudent mythomaniac", claims that have coloured Lawrence's reputation ever since. Many believed his "venomous attack" upon Lawrence's reputation was nothing more… Read More
