Description:
London: Brassey's, 2000. Second, Revised, Edition. Hardcover. This book is a must for Churchill collectors. Written by Churchill expert and International Churchill Society founder Richard Langworth, it discusses in detail nearly all English language editions of Churchill's works. This is a beautifully fine, nearly as new jacketed copy of the desirable second (corrected) edition of 2000, containing "all the additional corrections I have compiled to date through readers of the First Edition and colleagues around the world." Moreover, this copy is also inscribed by the author. Inked in blue in two lines above the author's name on the title page is: "Peter Robel | from Richard Langworth". The binding is square, clean, bright, and tight with tiny bumps to the rear cover corners, the contents pristine, crisp and bright with no spotting, soiling, or signs of handling. The dust jacket is crisp, bright, and complete. The jacket is protected beneath a clear, removable, archival cover. The life and… Read More

New York: George H. Doran, 1927. Numbered and limited issue of the first edition. Hardcover. This is copy 101 of 250 of the publisher's limited issue of the first U.S. edition, hand-numbered thus on the limitation page. This is a better than near-fine, unread copy accompanied by the flawed and worn original dust jacket and slipcase. This is a large, handsome book. The volume measures 10.625 x 8.125 inches (30 x 20.6 cm), bound in heavy blue buckram with a brown leather spine label, gilt top edge, blue and yellow head and tail bands, and blue endpapers. The contents are printed on large sheets of laid paper with generous margins and untrimmed fore and bottom edges. The edition is profusely illustrated with 18 plates, 10 in color, the full-page color plates each preceded by a tissue guard printed with caption, the black and white plates each… Read More

This the Castle Hill Press limited edition of the full 1922 "Oxford" text, one of 752 sets total and only 75 “extra-illustrated sets” issued thus, with an additional illustrations portfolio and specially-sized slipcase. This edition marked the first time that Lawrence's full text, originally circulated to a select few in 1922, was made available to the public. This setÂ’s limitation page is hand-numbered "113". The volumes are pristine. The dust jackets are crisp and immaculate apart from faint transfer browning from the leather spine labels and a small mark on the blank rear face of the Illustrations volume jacket. The jackets are protected beneath removable, clear, archival covers. The additional illustrations folio is complete. Only the publisherÂ’s slipcase shows some scuffing, but is nonetheless bright and intact. Seven Pillars of Wisdom is the story of the remarkable odyssey of T. E. Description:
London: Corvinus Press, 1937. First, finely bound, limited, and hand-numbered edition. Hardcover. This is a particularly well-preserved copy of the scarce and extraordinarily beautiful 1937 Corvinus Press limited first edition of The Diary of T. E. Lawrence, which has been called “the most ambitious and handsome volume published by the Corvinus Press.” Of the entire edition of 203 copies, 130 were printed thus on sumptuous, mould-made “parchment substitute paper” with gilt top edge and untrimmed fore and bottom edges, bound with 13 tissue-guarded collotype plates of photographs “taken by the author during the time the diary was being written.” These are bound in quarter brown leather with the gilt-stamped title bracketed by a gilt-stamped Corvinus Press crow at each end of the spine. The covers feature beautifully textured chirigami kozo boards with parchment corners. It was issued by the publisher in a seldom-seen brown card slipcase. Description:
London: Jonathan Cape Ltd., 1927. Numbered and limited issue of the first edition. Quarter leather. This is the English first, limited, and numbered edition of Revolt in the Desert - the first version of Seven Pillars of Wisdom published for the general public in LawrenceÂ’s lifetime. This limited edition was distinctly different from its English trade edition counterpart. The binding is larger and features quarter brown pigskin spine over brown buckram boards with a gilt rule transition. The extensively illustrated contents feature generous margins, untrimmed fore and bottom edges, gilt top edges, and green and yellow head and tail bands. The edition was limited to 315 copies. The large size of the volume was dictated by inclusion of colored plates from the 1926 SubscribersÂ’ edition of Seven Pillars of Wisdom. As a result, the text differs from the trade issue; “In order to justify the inclusion of some of the persons represented in the plates and otherwise mentioned in the text, a few extra… Read More

Description:
Melbourne & New York: George J. Hicks & Co. / Doubleday, Doran & Company, 1927. First "Australasian Edition". Hardcover. This Australasian issue of Revolt in the Desert is distinguished by the unique dust jacket. Australian publisher George J. Hicks & Co obtained second printing copies from the American publisher, Doran, which were then fitted with a “George J. Hicks & Co.” dust jacket. The second printing of the American first edition swiftly followed the first in 1927, differing only by absence of a small publisherÂ’s insignia on the copyright page and “Doubleday, Doran” rather than just “Doran” on the title page (the merger having occurred in 1927 after the first printing). As noted by OÂ’Brien (A107, p.83) “at least two copies of this later impression exist which have dust wrapper with George J. Hicks imprint on spine.” This is one such copy. The Australasian jacket is printed black on heavy, ribbed, tan paper featuring a front cover line drawing profile of Lawrence in Arab headdress, a… Read More

Description:
New York: George H. Doran, 1927. Second U.S. edition ("Gift Edition"). Hardcover. Revolt in the Desert is the only version of Seven Pillars of Wisdom published for the general public in LawrenceÂ’s lifetime. This is the second American edition – the so-called “Gift Edition” issued for the 1927 Christmas season. Although it resembles the English first edition in dust jacket, binding, and format, illustrations render this second American edition unique. The text contains 18 black and white line cuts from the famous 1926 SubscriberÂ’s edition of Seven Pillars of Wisdom found in no other edition of Revolt in the Desert, and striking Kennington endpapers are also exclusive to this edition. Condition approaches near fine in a good plus dust jacket. The brown buckram binding is square, clean, bright, and tight with vivid spine gilt and only trivial shelf wear to the bottom edges. The contents are clean with no spotting and no previous ownership marks. All illustrations are intact, as are the Kennington… Read More

London: Palestine Exploration Fund, 1914. First English Edition, first issue binding. Hardcover. This first edition, first issue is the first work published in book form of the man who would a few short years later be transformed from an eccentric junior intelligence officer into “Lawrence of Arabia”. During the First World War Thomas Edward Lawrence (1888-1935), just out of Oxford on an archaeology expedition with the British Museum, was summoned to Cairo where his experience in the language and geography of the region was put to use by the Foreign Office. There began his remarkable odyssey as instigator, organizer, hero, and tragic figure of the Arab revolt against the Ottoman Empire. This copy is the First (English) edition, in the first (1914) issue binding. Condition approaches very good plus, sound, complete, and free of any repair or restoration. The contents appear to be a mixed issue of the first edition. The text appears consonant with first issue; in line 11 of p.40, “business” is uncorrected. The Last Days of Pompeii is Lord Lytton's 1834 novel inspired by the namesake painting by Russian painter Karl Briullov, which Lytton had seen in Milan. Edward George Earle Lytton Bulwer-Lytton, 1st Baron Lytton (1803–1873), was an English novelist, poet, playwright, and politician. This is an illustrated, limited edition circa 1890 (undated) ink-stamped #478 of 500 copies on the limitation page, which characterizes the edition as "Edition de Luxe". Condition is good plus.
