Description:
Amsterdam: Chez E. Maaskamp, 1811. Second Edition. Full Calf. Near Fine. With 21 hand-colored plates watermarked from 1803 and 1811 (mostly the latter) with the names of Maaskamp and Colnaghi & Co. of London. Plates engraved by Portman after paintings of J. Kuyper. Colas 1681. Hiler 557. The plates stand out among so many others of the same era for their depiction of people doing things. These are truly genre scenes, as opposed to static costume poses, and they thus deliver visual information about aspects of the livelihood, custom and culture of the Dutch, as intended by the book's title, which translates as "Representations of the Costume, Morals and Customs of Holland in the Early 19th Century". While there is some scattered light foxing in the book, the plates themselves are for the most part exceptionally bright and clean. A few leaves have a tight crease now flattened -- the one plate that this affects it does so de minimus-ly and is scarcely worth comment. The full…

Amsterdam: E. Maaskamp, 1808, 1811. Half Morocco, Cloth boards. Very Good. Large 4to. 30 by 25 cm. With 21 hand-colored plates including allegorical frontis plate watermarked 1811 with the names of Maaskamp and Colnaghi & Co. of London. (The title gives publication date of 1808, as is also embossed in gilt on spine foot, but given watermarking, this copy should be viewed as the second edition (the first was issued in 1803) and the first edition issued in English.) Plates engraved by Portman after paintings of J. Kuyper. Colas 1681. Hiler 557. The plates stand out among so many others of the same era for their depiction of people doing things. These are truly genre scenes, as opposed to static costume poses, and they thus deliver visual information about aspects of the livelihood, custom and culture of the Dutch. Foxing of preliminaries and final leaves, with some scattered foxing elsewhere, affecting mostly text pages. Most of the plates are clean or have the lightest of marginal foxing.…

Description:
Paris: Les Arts et le Livre, 1926. Limited Edition. Stiff Wraps. Near Fine. One of 600 copies in limited edition. This copy is unnumbered. Folio, 38 by 28 cm. Half title, title, iv, 45. [2] pp. With 12 lithographs by Vertes, and these have very occasional touches of color. A work concerning female domestic servants, and serving up light erotica, and fillip of naughtiness. The text is driven by the Vertès artwork, and not the other way around. Condition: Light soiling to pink wraps. Some edge wear to the wraps, now protected with mylar covering. Hinge in several places, when one opens the book widely, looks as if loosening or opening, probably a gap created by the cutting out a sheet of tissue, evidence of which is still visible in narrow strips. Otherwise, interior clean, binding tight.

Description:
Wraps. Ribbon. . Charming, beautiful souvenir booklet issued presumably by Cunard, but no publishing information found in the booklet, which is demonstrably scarce. Only one copy located on OCLC First Search, at the Peabody Essex Museum, and no copies found in commerce at the date of this listing. N.d., late 1920s. Tall folio, 37.5 by 21 cm. Unpaginated, [32] pp. The conceit of the brochure is that it is a breezy, very long, handwritten letter serving also as a diary composed by a insouciant flapper on her first Transatlantic crossing, this one being on the R. M. S. Aquitania. Throughout the text she gushes about such things as the courtesy of the staff and the many wonderful amenities and marvels of the ocean liner, and far more so than an actual young woman would have devoted her authorial energies towards, even if she were so overwhelmed by all aspects of the ship. While certainly not distinguished literature, though, the text does helpfully touch on the many aspects of the luxury…

Description:
London: Martin Secker. Printed by The Mayflower Press, Plymouth, 1922. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good Minus. With a substantial, if somewhat crytic to us, inscription by Machen, in ink, to Walter Richter, dated September 13th, 1923, and signed with Machen's initials. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. 309, [3] pp. The inscription reads: "'The stars glides [sic] only in the darkness & vanish away in clearer light.' This is a modified sentence from 'The Hill of Dreams,' and am inclined to think that in its modified form it expresses a [sic] universal truth of the mystic satire. A.M." Unfortunately, we don't know who the recipient, Walter A. Richter, was, or what his relationship with Machen might have been. The novel, of course, is arguably Machen's greatest masterpiece, and certainly among his three or four best works of fiction which still attract non-specialist readers. In the back -- the last two leaves with content -- are publisher's ads, one page devoted to the tales of Henry James…

Description:
Paris: H. Launette, 1883. Limited First Edition. Quarter Morocco. Very Good Plus. Grasset, Eugene. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. One of 200 unnumbered copies on Papier de Chine. Georgeous color illustrations by Grasset and printed in chromotypography by Charles Grillot. A retelling of the "Chanson de Geste" of Charlemagne and his barons, this is one of the most important and influential illustrated books of the Art Nouveau era. Ray, in the Art of French Illustration, describes the book as epochal! Gillot persuaded Grasset to furnish "Merovingian" style designs to showcase chromolithographic book illustration. As stunning as the illustrations proper is how they were woven in and incorporated into borders and set on the page. See Ray, The Art of French Illustrated Book 357, 464, 465. Ironically, Grasset himself was ambivalent about the whole process of book illustration, which he found onerous in how it forced him to confine his visual ideas to the spatial limitations…

Detroit: George E. Pomeroy & Co., 1855. Blindstamped Cloth. Very Good. Fun to read for the foreign-ness of its mode of expression as much as some of the principles of etiquette propounded. Description:
London; New York: Lawrence & Bullen, Limited; Putnam, 1904. First Edition. Half Morocco. Very Good. Plates in Colour After Shirley Slocombe. Folio. 1904 to 1908, important study of English furniture, reprinted several times, but none of the reissues capture the elegant production of the first edition, which is commensurate, in book-form, with the antique pieces it focuses upon. The volumes are internally very clean, bindings tight. Foreedges have some soilage, not affecting pages themselves. Rubbing to spine along gutters, and morocco corners. Leather is contemporary -- of date of publication. Wear to spine tips, and some grubbiness in general to spine, but not disconcerting. Preliminaries in Vol One loose but still attached, but not affecting frontis ill page, nor title page and beyond. Otherwise, this and other volumes tight. Interiors fine, and thus overall the set is very good. 60 colour plates, and many other photographic illustrations -- over 900 black and white illustratiions.

Description:
Firenze (Florence): Sezione d'Arti Grafichedell'Istituto d'Arte Statale, 1950. Folio, 32 by 25 cm. Folded sheet with three pages of text, in Italian, prefacing the 12 plates of Magni's primitivist artwork, all of which are loose plates housed under a sleeve, cut at a bias, in the portfolio. The subject of the artwork is mostly animals, with a human figure here and there, and rendered in light blues, light greeens, pinks, yellows, and black. Lines are drawn deliberately coarsely, yet there is an animation and sense of movement to the figures. The paintings have a kinship to some of Chagall, some of Picasso, and others who drew upon the spirit of cave drawings. Scarce, with no copies found on OCLC First Search or in commerce on the date of this listing.
