Some scuffing to sides, gilt a little dulled; overall very good and very sound.

On good quality paper (not newspaper stock). Printed caption, identifying the subject below the image. Some very light foxing else very good and with good margins; ideal for framing. From "The National Portrait Gallery of Eminent Personages" issued as a supplement to "The Illustrated News of the World" which was published 1858-1864. With the original printed leaf of text giving biographical details of the subject.

Some foxing or tanning, some rubbing to extremities but generally good. Bound with the half-titles. Anonymous.

With the binder's ticket of J. Rowbotham Caoutchouc Bookbinder, 70 Castle St. East, Oxford Street on front pastedown. The leaves now loose due to the usual failure of the latex (caoutchouc) binding glue. ( A particular (and probably first) form of adhesive binding, invented by William Hancock, and patented in 1836). Chip in the blank margin of 2 leaves without loss. Short split to upper joint and wear to headband. "The profits of this work......are devoted to the Ragged School Union".
