Three-quarter black calf spine and corners, with red marbled papers on the boards. Some rubs and edge wear, but hinges strong. Age toning to the paper throughout, and some foxing. Book plate says " English Rooms, Funchal, may be kept 10 days" No other hints of library status, so apparently a rooming house loaning system. An officer with the Gurkhas for 30 years, this is his record of travel, hunting, bird shooting and fishing. .

Original illustrated paper on boards, 3 children watchint a cuckoo clock about to strike. No date, but a gift inscription of 1888 on inside of the front board. Edgewear minimal at the corners, and none at the spine ends. Binding is solid although the inside hinges are cracked. The Germans were producing the best chromolithographs at this time, this book done by Ernest Nister of Nuremberg. Inside, pages clean and tight - no foxing or browning. Lovely illustrations on nearly every page. .

Slight wear at two corners. Top edge gilt. In addition to the biography, there is a listing of about 1000 portraits executed by Stuart including their whereabouts as of 1879. Edgewear at the bottom edge and less soiling than usual on the ccream cloth, which was the standard binding for the Black limited editions.
