Very slightly rubbed to extremities, otherwise externally very good. Internally some light foxing to portraits, endpapers, and occasionally to text, especially to the first volume, but generally fairly clean. With portrait frontispieces to each volume, and another two portraits to third volume, bound without half-titles. Book plate of Horatio Noble Pym to front pastedowns. Now housed in a leather entry slipcase. The first edition of Mackay's extraordinarily popular work on human delusions, which included economic bubbles (South Sea bubble, Mississippi Company bubble, and tulip mania), alchemy, prophecies, thievery, beards, duelling, and price riots. Spine slightly faded, slightly rubbed to extremities. Internally quite bright and clean. From the library of Earl Eldon, with his name and bookplate to front pastedown. Second Edition. Full Calf. [28], 793, [3], 59, [1], 168pp. Full vellum, raised bands, spine in seven panels, title in ink to second panel, covers with central arabesque inside a two line panel with fleuron corner pieces inside a double fillet border. Small amount of loss to first panel, some creasing and browning to spine, covers slightly splayed. Internally slightly browned and very lightly dust-stained to edges. Previous owners bookplate to front pastedown and another name to title page. Additional engraved title. Usual attractive Delphin edition. Brunet III:1492, Schweiger 599. First Edition. Full Vellum. Lugduni Batavorum (Leiden): Ex Officina Hackiana, 1670. [16], 844pp, [32]. Full vellum with overlapping fore-edges, smooth spine divided into six panels by gilt double rules, first panel with author's name in gilt, remaining panels with central tudor rose in gilt, covers with gilt double fillet border and central coat of arms. Slightly rubbed, vellum very slightly grubby, internally lightly browned, but generally clean. Engraved title page. Dibdin calls this the best variorum edition, "elegantly printed by Hackius, and was superintended by Thysius ... It is now a scarce book" (Dibdin). Dibdin II:522, Schweiger II:1111. First Thus. Original blue-green cloth, title, author and publisher in gilt to spine with publisher's circular blind stamp to centre of covers, orange endpapers. Rebacked, with original back strip laid down, gilt to spine has largely been retouched (ie. bands to head, title, and author). Back strip lightly stained. Internally lightly browned and lightly foxed throughout, but nothing too obtrusive. Housed in a very good morocco backed drop back box, made by Asprey & Garrard. Meunier 98' in gilt to foot, silk brocade flyleaves, and combed and curled marbled endpapers, original wrappers bound in.
