Description:
[St. Johns?]: n.p., ca. 1910. 27 cm; 64-222, X (of XI) pages. Lacks final leaf with page XI; pages IX-X supplied in facsimile. Bound in recent half cloth over marbled boards, titled on spine. Astonishingly well-traveled (considering the absence of mechanization), Dr. William MacGregor was posted as a medical officer first in the Seychelles, then in Mauritius, then he moved up the ranks to become Chief Medical Officer in Fiji before his appointment to the post of administrator of British New Guinea, and later Governor of Lagos! In 1904, he was appointed Governor of Newfoundland. In that post, he organized and personally conducted a scientific expedition to Labrador, the aim of which was to survey its coast and investigate its natural resources. The results of this expedition, published here, were of anthropological as well as geographical and meteorological interest, for which he was awarded the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St. Michael and St. George. Extremely rare.

Description:
Venice: Luigi Pavino, 1716. Third edition. Very Good. Octavo (18 cm); [16], 417, [30] pages. Roman and italic type. One woodcut letter populated with figures. Freshly bound in full morocco with gilt title label. Original marbled endleaves. Edges stained red. Early owner's autograph on front blank. Occasional light blemishes on first and last leaves. Masquerading as the umpty-umpth treatise on chivalry and dueling, this essay by the 18th-century Veronese polymath Scipione Maffei is in fact a radical step forward in political science. It sustains that qualities of virtue and nobility do not derive from birthrights or from family lineage, but are earned through professional skills and legal advancement based on merit.

Description:
[Vicenza?]: Il Comitato di Pubblica Istruzione, [1797]. Original edition. Very Good. Octavo (18 cm); 16 pages. In red and green lattice-patterned woodblock-printed paper wraps. In 1797, the Republic of Venice fell to the French. Beginning in April of that year, the city of Vicenza and the surrounding Euganean hills were under Napoleon's French military rule for only 8 months before it was ceded to the Austrians. This poem celebrates Napoleon and the liberation of Vicenza from the doges of Venice, coupling it to the French day of liberation (14 July, known as 26 Messidoro under the short-lived Republican calendar). Among the verses: "See us insulting the Venetian lion. We're not afraid anymore. And he bites his own lips, quavering helplessly in anger." The French "Comité de l'Instruction Publique" was dedicated to the removal of Church doctrine from public education.
