Paris: Corbet, Libraire, 1846. Octavo, xvi, 464 pages. Includes the scarce half-title. Title page is a cancel. Lacking the frontispiece. Stated eighth edition, but actually the ninth edition according to Cagle, A Matter of Taste (an earlier "huitieme edition" was published in 1838). A popular work, first published in 1803 and reissued frequently throughout the first half of the nineteenth century (this 1846 edition is the last published). Extensive recipes for making all manner of chocolates, hard and soft candies, candied fruits, jellies and marmalades, and cookies, as well as skin creams, dentifrices, and other beauty and hygiene aids. Also contains some period curiosities -- the detection of counterfeit chocolates, sorbets served in cheese, gummed candies made from Irish lichen, etc. -- as well as a useful vocabulary and historical dictionary of ingredients. Some scuffing to contemporary half-calf and marbled boards. Very good, a clean and solid copy, though lacking the frontispiece. [Cagle, 294;… Read More

Edinburgh: Printed for the author, and sold by her, at her house, Stephen Law's close, back of the City-guard, 1777. Duodecimo (17.5 x 11 cm.), [i-v] vi-xii, [1], 2-238. Detailed table of contents. Publisher's advertisement. Stated and evident "second edition"; originally issued in 1773, with a second printing in 1774 (see Maclean, page 92). Susanna MacIver ran one of the few cookery schools in Edinburgh, a task shared with Mrs. Frazer, and Frazer's book, The Practice of Cookery (1791), is largely based on this work. Though the general tenor shows French influence, there are a number of distinctly Scottish recipes including 'Scots collops', stewed turnips, tablet, six or seven venison dishes, and 'a good Scots haggies.' This is the first appearance of haggis in a Scottish recipes book, though there are earlier recipes printing in England, and earlier mentions of the dish in Scotland. In later editions of MacIver's work she adds dinner menus for five to fifteen people, as well as lists of ingredients… Read More

Originally issued in 1773, with a second printing in 1774. The author explains that this new edition contains examples of Bills of Fare as well as a list of Ingredients by Season. Susanna Maciver ran one of the few cookery schools in Edinburgh, a task shared with Mrs. Frazer. Mrs. Frazer's book, The Practice of Cookery (1791), is largely based on this work. In later editions of Maciver's work, menus for dinners for five to fifteen people, as well as lists of ingredients in season month by month, are added. Description:
Garden City: Doubleday & Company, Inc, 1949. Small octavo (19.5 x 12 cm.), [7], 245 pages. Second edition, revised, originally issued in 1948. A colorful guide to restaurant dining in New York City in the years following the Second World War. The guide has an unusual organizing structure, with four hundred seventy-five restaurants grouped into Shelly & Finny Fare, Gobblers, Potpies, and Popovers, Southern Accent, Chummy and Cheery, Heavy Date Coming Up, Plush and Splash, Quick on the Snigger, Gags, Glitter and Girls, Pagoda Provender, and Eatables for Outriders, amongst others. Lawton Mackall was (at least at the time) "the only non-professional member of that most select circle of wine and food purveyors, the renowned Society of Restaurateurs". In publisher's black cloth, with an ink stripe to the top edge, otherwise very good. Dust jacket is split at the front flap, and faded at the spine. Still, better than good.

With fifty recipes for ice cream, sorbet, etc. as well as descriptions of the maker, a price list, comments etc. The two clipped illustrations are a view of the "Improved" White Mountain Freezer, and a detailed image of Repairs for the White Mountain Freezer, depicting twenty-seven replacement parts. [l'Ain (France), 1870. Large quarto (32.5 x 25 cm.), eight sheets of text and six of color drawings. There are forty-nine original watercolors and four plain drawings of mushrooms found in the department of Ain. The watercolor drawings are approximately life-size and realistic with fine shades of color as well as precise details on the feet, rings, blades and caps. ~ Unpublished manuscript by Joannes-Erhard Valentin-Smith, a member of the Academy of Sciences, Belles-lettres and Arts of Lyon but also a founding member in 1872 of the Literary, Historical and Archaeological Society of the department of Ain. The present manuscript, which describes mushrooms beginning with the letter A (Agaric) up to the letter C (Yellow Clavary), with two exceptions (Delicious Morel and Half-free Morel), is an unfinished and incomplete preparatory work to a description general of all mushrooms growing in the department of Ain.
