Description:
1912-58. A remarkable collection of scarce works by influential Australian poet and critic Frederick T. Macartney (1887-1980), four of which signed, all in notably bright condition. Macartney was a noted critic across the early 20th century. He "valued his poetry far above his other literary endeavours and was a craftsman, ranging diversely from philosophy to light satire, with wit and irony; friendly critics admired his 'vigorous imagery' and 'intellectual subtlety'" (Australian Dictionary of Biography). As a young man he was identified as rationalist and an anti-conscriptionist, was a Fabian member of the Victorian Socialist Party, and in 1916 was a founder of the Melbourne Literary Club. Collection consisting of: i) Dewed Petals. Melbourne: privately printed, 1912. Octavo. Original green paper wrappers, titles to front cover in black. Paper and spine disintegrated. First edition, sole printing, of the authors first collection of poetry, signed and dated by the author on the colophon. The print run… Read More

Description:
Edinburgh: William Blackwood & Sons Ltd,, 1926. First edition, first impression, of MacDiarmid's second collection of Scots poetry. The pre-eminent literary figure of the 20th-century Scottish Renaissance, Hugh MacDiarmid, born Christopher Murray Grieve (1892-1978), is as well-known for his Scottish nationalist and communist politics as for his literary output. In the present collection and throughout the 1920s, he developed a "synthetic Scots" that drew on a variety of dialects and relied on Scots dictionaries rather than everyday speech, in an effort to create a unified, national literary language. "The anti-British gesture of recovering a Scottish voice – and subsequently a Scottish culture and politics – is the nationalist root of MacDiarmid's synthetic Scots", and his style "is no reactionary backward step, but a modernist stance that draws on a populist tradition... in order to radically refashion the cultural and political state of the nation" (Lyall, pp. 8 & 95). During the 1930s, however,… Read More

Description:
London: Seeley, Service & Co., Ltd,, 1932. Retaining the genuinely scarce dust jacket First edition, first impression, and the publisher's file copy, stamped as such on the fore and bottom edges. This lively memoir by the veteran Tibetologist includes a description of the time in 1910 when he helped protect his friend the 13th Dalai Lama from pursuing Chinese forces. David Macdonald (c.1870-1962) combined his academic research with a long-held appointment as the British trade agent in Tibet. He participated in the 1904 Younghusband expedition to Lhasa, was on intimate terms with many important Tibetan religious leaders, and spoke Tibetan with an impressive fluency. In Kalimpong, he ran the famous Himalayan Hotel, a guesthouse which hosted Alexandra David-Néel, Heinrich Harrer, Sir Charles Bell, and many other great Tibetologists. Octavo. Original yellow sand-grained cloth, spine lettered in gilt, top edge yellow. With illustrated dust jacket. Half-tone frontispiece after a photograph of the Tashi… Read More

Description:
London: Jonathan Cape,, 1930. First edition, first impression, presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the initial blank "with the kindest regards of the speaker J. Ramsay Macdonald", to the influential society hostess, Edith Helen Vane-Tempest-Stewart, Marchioness of Londonderry (1878-1959), with her bookplate on the front pastedown. Edith was appointed colonel-in-chief of the Women's Volunteer Reserve, resigning her position in 1915 to establish the Women's Legion, "an organization designed to train women to release men for active service; initially providing cooks for the army, it developed administrative and clerical branches, and an agriculture section, in which she took particular interest" (ODNB). She was the first woman to be appointed DBE (Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire, Military Division) upon the Order's establishment in 1917. Her beautifully designed and engraved bookplate incorporates the glamorous portrait by Philip de Laszlo showing her in uniform, against a… Read More

Description:
London: Jonathan Cape,, 1956. First UK edition of this decidedly uncommon work in the desirable dust jacket. In this comprehensive and enthusiastic eyewitness account of the peoples of Borneo, MacDonald writes affectionately on the culture of the Land Dayaks, Ibans, Kayans and Kenyahs, Melanaus, Malays and Chinese. Malcolm MacDonald (1901–1981) was a Scottish politician and diplomat. He was appointed governor-general of the Malay States and Singapore in 1946, where he continued to work for another eight years. He was apparently held in high regard by the local Iban tribe: "In a remarkable tribute to his interest and high standing among Borneo peoples, he was adopted as a 'son' of the Iban paramount chief Temonggong Koh" (ODNB). The book garnered significant attention from reviewers on its release: "His attitude towards these people is one of unfailing respect and of lively affection. They are made real and knowable for the reader: the aged chieftain Temonggong Koh and his daughters Mindum and… Read More

Description:
London & Lossiemouth: , 1911. First edition of Ramsay Macdonald's touching tribute to his wife, published in a small unnumbered edition the year of her death for private distribution, signed by the author on the front free endpaper. Macdonald was the first Labour Party prime minister, serving in both 1924, and from 1929 to 1935. The book (appended with orations from her funeral) gives an account of the life - though chiefly focusing on her personality and his relationship with her - of Margaret, like James Ramsay a keen and active socialist, a promoter of female trade unions, and an executive member of the National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies. Her death at only 41 from blood poisoning was a great distress to Ramsay, and he did not remarry. Octavo. Original black sheep, spine with gilt monograms MEM [Margaret Ethel Macdonald] and JRM [James Ramsay Macdonald], front cover lettered in gilt, marbled endpapers, gilt edges.
