Verry Good ++, Clean, shiny, text clear, pages bright, corners not bumped/No DJ. Joseph and His Brothers (Joseph und seine Brüder) is a four-part novel by Thomas Mann, written over the course of 16 years. Mann retells the familiar stories of Genesis, from Jacob to Joseph (chapters 27-50), setting it in the historical context of the Amarna Period. Mann considered it his greatest work. Mann, who'd been awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1929, was living in exile in Switzerland when the first volume, "The Stories of Jacob," was published in 1933, the year Hitler came to power in Germany. "Young Joseph" followed in 1934, and in 1936, the year "Joseph in Egypt" came out, New York, Alfred A. Knopf, 1938. Alfred A Knopf, New York, 1944. Alfred A Knopf, New York, Stated First American Edition,1944. Black cloth over boards, gold lettering. No DJ. Good copy. Very Good, clean, bright, no bumped corners,no writing or owner's plates/No DJ.. Thomas Mann regarded his monumental retelling of the biblical story of Joseph as his magnum opus. He conceived of the four parts -- The Stories of Jacob, Young Joseph, Joseph in Egypt, and Joseph the Provider -- as a unified narrative, a "mythological novel" of Joseph's fall into slavery and his rise to be lord over Egypt. Deploying lavish, persuasive detail, Mann conjures for us the world of patriarchs and pharaohs, the ancient civilizations of Egypt, Mesopotamia, and Palestine, and the universal force of human love in all its beauty, desperation, absurdity, and pain. The result is a brilliant. Alfred A Knopf, New York, Stated First American Edition,1944. Very Good, clean, bright, no bumped corners,no writing or owner's plates. Black cloth over… Read More

This collection of captivating tales displays Twain's characteristic energy, imagination, and sense of fun, as well as the darkly satirical edge that marks so much of his work. His targets range from the difficulty of learning German (explored in a three-act play where two young lovers are obliged to conduct their courtship in beginning German), to the incompetence of military command (found in a sketch called "Luck" in which it is revealed that a celebrated general's most lauded battle stratagem resulted from his confusing his right hand with his left).
